its handsome and appropriate fittings in contrast with the appearance of the room over the stable in which court was held for some time back there was the rostrum constructed so that a judge can occupy it with something like dignity especially if that quality be a component of bis character there was wag the apa e allotted to members of the bar divided the spectators portion of the hall by an elegant railing the floor of the room suitably matted and everything else to match the whole giving an air of comfort that was quite refa rera ebbing we almost forgot to say bay ay also that every thing was waa scrupulously clean and there was a complete absence of nauseating effluvium flu fiu vium ai as there were no lodging places in the lower regions of the building and consequently there were also no ominous brayl bray ings from hungry mules to echo a judicial remark or to drown the pearly droppings of a metaphor izing lawyer in his sublime flights of eloquence INDIANS we met brother H HN N larter of sanpete hanpeter county today to day he arrived in town yesterday in company with col john L ivie and the batters lat family he reports that when they were about four miles from the to some statements made by a city con temporary contemporary SALT laue lawz CITY july ad 1879 1872 9 editor deseret news I 1 wish to correct a statement which appeared in the herald berald this morning regarding my deceased father who wag wart murdered by indians at scipio in 1866 the statement that my father was killed by indians out of revenge for having himself killed an indian is totally untrue my father came to utah in 1848 and from that time till he was massacred he was a friend to the indians and was wag well known for his mild an and peaceable character I 1 will also state that the circumstances which led to the killing of an indian by my brother james were as follows the indian whom he killed came to scipio the evening before the raid in which my father was killed was was made and carried intelligence to the ma party of indians concerning the condition of the settlement after the raid was waa made this treacherous treche rous indian returned pretending friendliness while my fathers blood was scarcely dred dr ed on the ground under these circumstances my brother killed him these are fire facts which I 1 can prove at any time I 1 had the indian interpreter in san pete county inquire about the matter of the chief who led the marauding ma party who killed my father and he states that the indian who was killed was in communication ni cation with the party for ten days before the raid was made I 1 may say in addition to the above that besides killing my father they took worth of property y which belonged to him and about worth which belonged to my brother
