Es governor of this territory and one of the members for salt sait Lake nominated hon hoil thos fitch and made the following remarks in connection therewith in nominating mr fitch I 1 feel ian to be alik my duty and privilege to endorse him as a fitting for the state of deseret des Dea eret I 1 am aware that the course of mr fitch as regards the people of orthis this ter is known to most perhaps to all of f you yet a brief mention of it bero bere may not be inappropriate A little more than two years ago when the cullom bill a bill which wa begotten of prejudice and tran trap which was conceived and quickened in rottenness and corruption brought forth by op oppression r i on and attended medically by political liaf eitt eist tricksters trick r 19 katers a more infamous measure than which was never concocted in in the mind of man when that wis was presented be fore the house of representatives for en approval mr fitch cooperating with your able delegate and davd save him hini almost single handed and alone aion against the prejudices or of the country country against the prejudices of his constituents against the request of most of his friends guided by right and a sense of justice alone opposed that measure and when the debate was finished the friends of that oppression felt that if it had not received a blow that would result in instantaneous death the stroke was at least mortal and and an early demise might be expected I 1 am aware that mr fitcha religions sentiments diner differ widely from most of the members of this floor I 1 am aware too that the outside world believe that whatever is not orthodox mormonism cannot be endorsed by the Sl mormon ormon onmon people gentlemen such has not been my experience among you such I 1 venture to say has not been the experience of any person who has come abre for honest purposes and is disposed to bo be upright and just aad and although while Itis it is admitted that the friends of the tiie mormon faith ard areen in the dency deney in both houses yet still on this account do not hesitate nor doubt one moment the success of my candidate to rne me a faith begotten of religious religions intolerance and prejudice which says I 1 am opposed to you and you to me because we cannot see our paths to future happiness in exactly the same direction is the most narrow and mean of human ideas I 1 believe as I 1 know you believe in a broader nobler and more enlightened platform shall I 1 ask the brave soldier who fights by my side ride in the cause of mankind it our faiths dis diR disagree agree shall I 1 question the friend I 1 have honored and tried if he kneel not beside the same altar with me from the heretic beretic airl airi of my soul shall I 1 fly to seek somewhere else A more orthodox kiss no perish the law and the rule that would try truth valor and love by a stan standard daid dald like this i there are other reasons which in hi my mind make mr fitch a fitting candidate for senator for the state slate of deseret he is a friend of female suffrage and I 1 believe that if heis hels he is elected he wil lurge that as a national measure and thus I 1 t think ink become to some extent a national benefactor b ef when that measure was first adopted by the legislature of the territory of utah whatever might have been my hesitations and doubts in rel rei relation atlon to it then I 1 think the experience of the past two years has hag fully demonstrated that it is in harmony with progress and the spirit and the genius of the a age go in which we live le liet t those who fear that the ladies of the land will be dragged down from their high womanly tion by a contact with politics that woman will not exercise the privilege wisely that she will not bo true to her country herself and her frietas frieu as come and witness an election day dayi id dUtah utah let them i compare it with election days another in other places es and I 1 will venture the tho assertion that in this respect a at least although living among the mountains they will admit we are ahead of the age the pre pro presence sence senco and voice of woman purify and cheer before her vice shrinks away and its votaries vot aries are sometimes so ashamed at her approach that they resolve en masse not to visit the polls whatever else eise is faise laise woman is always true not she with traitorous kiss kisa her savior not she betrayed jm with unhappy tongue she when apostles Apo sties atles shrank did danger brave last at the cross and earliest at the grave 1 I 1 mr fitch has been tried in the ibe halls of legislation that he is able all his friends agree and none of bs enemies dispute I 1 believe that he will make a most nitting fitting and able senator I 1 confidently believe that he will receive your support here today to day and with equal confidence I 1 believe that none of you will have cause to regret the sup port which you may now give him at the close of the remarks of mr mann the ball otting was called for and resulted in 35 15 votes for mr hooper 3 for mr fitch 3 for gen barnum the chair declared mr hooper elected for seco beco second nd senator the hon thos fitch general E M
