Show KVy Ihe Salt Lake Tribune, Sunday, October JMTq "l f'M m "yyrvi i f rpr ux 1 V 11, 19&4 A flatter of Taste T ake Plan Along Oil Buying Trip By William Pahlmann Fellow, American Institute of Interior Designers Young couples who are planning their first home enter a bewildering world, armed principally with their hopes and dreams. When they go to shop for home furnishing I feel they should also be armed with a few practical , items, as follows: L A reasonable, agreed-upobudget, which you should be determined to respect. 2. A floor plan of the rooms they will occupy with exact dimensions of the space, windows, doors and any" other openings. This floor plan is more satisfactory if it is drawn on graph n paper (purchasable at a stationery or dime in scale, with openstore) ings indicated. Tf you have pieces of furniture which have been inherited, given to you or previouly -owned, which you plan to use, these pieces should be drawn in on the floor plan tp scale in the places you plan to use them. ( You will knovF'tiien exactly how much wall space and floor space you have pit. This is the only satisfactory way of select- - . ing a large piece of furniture, such as a sofa or a breakfront. - - ' Carry Tape Measure d 3. A small, tape measure six feet long, with which you can measure furniture. It is not always possible to attract the attention of sales people or get accurate information, especully during sales, which I urge you to investigate. If you measure a. piece of furniture, you are more likely to at- tract the attention of a sales person who will be convinced you' mean business. - 4. A list of the furniture and accessoriostyou already have, with a description of the period or style. This will help you to choose new things of similar nature and quality. In the fine frenzy of shopping, you may forget what you have on what it looks like, and buy something Which wont suit it. If possible take photographs of such pieces and keep them . in your handbag. Paint Bring Samples 5. If a color scheme is already established, bring paint samples or wallpaper samples with you. To get a paint samplep-simpl- y paint a swatch on heavy brown paper and let it dry. If. you are shopping before walls and floors are done, establish your color scheme by going to paint stores and obtaining swatches of what you plan to use. Tf you dont know what colors you want, read and clip color samples from magazines, using the color illustrations in ads or editorial material, and try matching them up until .you come to a conclusion. Clip or staple all the dominent colors for each room together and have therp with you when 8U ; plastic-encase- Mr. and Mrs. Julian M. For the rich at pocketbook. - Louise Davis Answers: I agree with your mother-in-laAt any kind of a party, a kitchen should be considered the hostess very private domain and is no place to. greet guests especially when she is prepared .to meet them at the front door. Dear Louise: 1 am faced with the problem of wording our wedding invitations. We will be married at my sisters home so would it be correct to state the place for the ceremony such as at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Smith? I wonder if the address should be included. The reception will be held at the home of my brother and Should their name and address be also used? ry, ' Study Fabrics, Wallpaper pattern already existing in your rooms, a sample would be useful. That is. if you have a such as vinyl tile or anything that has pattern, it will be useful to you in studying fabrics or wallpaper. If you have wallpaper on the wall, it will affect, the choice of curiain and upholstery fabrics. If the wall has pattern, you are unlikely to want more pattern on the floor. 7. If you already have an area or accent rug,- or plan to buy one, draw this rug in on your graph paper floor plan where you expect to put it. Pay careful attention to the colors in this rug, since they affect other colors to be used. Shop Several Stores 8. Be prepared to shop several stores before you make any decisions. This should be a pleasure and not a chore to a bride and bridegroom, but it is also anecessity for the best buys. Watch the newspapers for advertisements of special sales. 9. Patronize reliable stores known for their good merchandise and responsibility and their reputation for service. When such stores advertise sales, their markdowns are likely to be good values. Most stores also offer merchandise in sales, but a good store will see that such merchandise offers legitimate value. Do not expect such reliability, nor servic from stores. When you shop in a good store, do so ed many emulate and so few seem to understand. The program, Art in Action will be brief and unusual, presenting various art forms simultaneously. The artist in action will be Don Olsen, nationally known Utah artist and teacher. The dancer in action, is assistant professor in the Modem Dance Department at the University of Utah; in action will be Betty Olsen, reading original selections. The electronic recording will furnish the background music. The unusual event Is being presented for the benefit of the Salt Lake Art Center. Tickets may be obtained at the Art Center, Zions Book Store, or from members of the Art Alliance. Mrs. Dudley M. Amoss Is chairman of the luncheon. Assisting her are Mrs. Robert Lewis Bliss, Mrs. Delbert M. Draper Jr., Mrs. F. S. Gillespie, Mrs. Norman Hayes, Mrs. Noel E. Pool, Mrs. Ralph A. McBroom, Mrs. Byrce E. Roe, Mrs. James R.
