Show wings AT brovo PROVO WOOLEN FAC f 1 nony dony TOKY E THE late visit orT of residents Presidents young and SmIths smithy several deral of the apostles and other elders to provo for the purpose of holding ito two ifo days meetings and attending to other business was most interesting and satisfactory to the visitors and doubtless profitable to the people of the benefit which results from such gatherings to the speakers and the hearers there ia Is no question quest on the experience of tha many years derng which t lils this system of visiting has been kursu pursued ed has established beyond all doub doubt ath that at its fruits are excellent etwas it wag was stated by pree Pret president ident young at the recent conference that better field for missionary labor in the world than utah territory affords to the elders it only requires one to td travel through the territory to see the force and truth of this remark the people are increasing in num numbers beis new settlements are being established and old oid ones oni enlarged and on every baud band there ia a demand for instruction if the first presidency and twelve apostles were to devote every saturday and sunday in the sear year to meeting with the people of the various cities and settlements tle ments throughout the Territory they would scarcely supply the demand there ia is for their ministrations in view of this fact the action of lent young and his counsellors coun at the recent conference in resigning the offices which the they y held the duties of which required their presence and time in this thia city ia is easily understood by these resignations they are left more free to travel and minister unto the people and fill the calls which are multiplying every day itis not probable that thih this city will Vill hereafter be favored to the extent tt it has been inthe past with the society and teachings of the leaders of the church there are other fields which demand their attention and bud counsels and it is likely they will receive them while at provo we visited the buildings which are being erected for the woolen factory this factory is being established upon the operative cooperative co principle we were aware that extensive premises were being built for this business and had seen the foundation which which had been prepared for far the main building but we were astonished at the large structures which we saw agen A gentleman who had visited provo lately and who ia is the agent for one of the largest machinery manufacturing companies in theowest th the west eWest had said that there were no factory buildings west of the alleghany allegheny Alleg hany any mountains equal to those of provo we knew that he was familiar with buildings of this description in all parts of the country and thought after hearing his remark that those at provo must ibbe be very ay good but still we were unprepared to joa joe see bee buch sueh auch such a substantial structure as we saw in the main building of the factory there are many larger probably but for solidity and st renith strength there isad is no better in any auy country the main building is of stone and is feet long iong 65 wide and four stories high exclusive of or th the tho e basement the stories are each twelve feet between I 1 foists joists at the side of and connected with the building is a tower arbut twenty feet equale in iri which the staircases will be built bulit the building will be crowned with a mansard roof it is the intention to fill the first and part of the second boora doors with looms spinning apparatus mules ac wilt occupy the remaining portion of the second noor floor and bud the entire third the fourth will be filled with carding machines close by the store are two anoble buildings which will be connected with it when finished with covered railways the largest of which is feet long 34 feet wide and has two stories exclusive of basement this will bo devoted to boiling cleansing and dying purposes the other building is 74 feet long iong 31 34 31 feet wide vide also two stories be side the tho basement this will be used for finishing purposed purposes pur it itis Is the intention to keep spindles les ies antwork at work a and nd eight sets of carding machines there will probably be about hands employed in the factory complete completo arrangements range ments will be made for washing the wool and it will be dried by machinery every exertion will be made to have tho the buildings gs covered early his wl winter anter the proprietors seem determined to spare s a r e no pains to mako the factory thoroughly tro roughly complete in all its details and we expect chati that when fairly in operation it will be one of the finest establishment in hi the country this enterprise was originated and put in motion by pres Tres president ident young whose counsels seib stis and suggestions have been invaluable in giving the tion a practicable shape and id 14 furnishing plans for tor the buildings their erection has bleen ably tended by bishop A 0 osmont OS moot assist assisted bd by the leading men d and citizen of provo such a factory as this must give a great impulse to the production of wool and we think the day is not far fai distant when wool wooi and the cloths claths manufactured from it will be unsurpassed by any in the world these buildings give one a pretty good idea of the progress which we as a people are making in the development of manufacturing fae fac turing inhere interests 86 they are a standing i refutation of jot the foolish ideas of those who hav asserted that utah was not well adapted for manufactures F and a tangible eviden evidence ce of the excellent results which accompany co operation cooperation president xoung young encouraged the ihei ve people 0 pie by saying baying that it would fong long until factories much larger than this now be being j n g built would be needed and be arec erected t ed and hib his hlf hearers hear bear ekit ekil belayed e avd what he said for it Js s no more unlikely to le bce fulfilled now than it etwas was a short time ago that such sueh a factory as a this of which we speak would be built in provo prove A r T A co system has hag been started in kansas for th the special especial purpose of farming and manufacturing silk the following ia is an extract from a letter respecting the new enterprise written from Vale VaI eton tou kansas and published in the st louis Z tribune abune we are in iii the early stages of preparation only as yet we have no organization of industry and but little diversity of pursuit sulby the principal labors being boing ordinary ingra far fan farming g and collecting materials for building we a hive have one loom weaving silk bilk velvet trimmings the whole work of preparing the tho silk and weaving it is done by one man his wife and daughter we expect to put additional looms in the new factory next spring and andas as soon AS our mulberry plantation shall be sufficiently grown say three years hence wa hope to provide employment for ivonen women and children in ii producing silk fin pin and d treating it froin from the cocoon cocco n to the finished fabric two years hence we hope to have a large mansion occupied a varied industry organized gani zed education established bec hec T and acceptable society af at p reson taU tah iau our work except the silk business is done by hired laborers 1 the Thea a bogl bova bove extrac or be db suggestive to many V of the itlie people of utah the soil of the territory is just the thing for growing the mulberry and in tending and abedi reeding feeding t ng the worms and preparing the silk for the weaver beav 1 lr the tens 0 of thousands thousand bof of children childre nl and n the thousands of w omen for is so celebrated might be profitably employed no portion of the continent proda proba probably ty is provided with the necessary skill to weave the raw mater la fal ial into silken fabrics and if taken hold of properly and as generally as it might b be silk gro growing and culture cultures cult would be 0 of i immense pecuniary benefit to the territory infinitely more so than mining for precious metals and we think no business promising half the sure returns this does ouid be commenced and carried on with less capital or trouble |
