Show OUR PIONEERS some mouths months ago wo we lot rattler enthused over the idea ot of erecting a m monument in a public place in tills this city to the memory of the men and women who built the foundation of this commonwealth this thia project ip appealed to us from the standpoint of pride and appreciation many of the cities throughout the state are arc adopting in g the plan of commemorating the labors of the pioneers with a suitable monument and surely we do not want to be behind in this movement at the time the idea was first mentioned every everybody bodi was busy making preparations for peach day arid and we were all too much occupied to ta give much thought to io a monument now the resting time if such there be has come and more time can be given given to a discussion and contemplation of i the subject A time honored custom has prevailed in this city to celebrate the glorious fourth of july one year and pioneer day the next year as it has been thought impracticable to have two big public celebrations so close together each year last year we had a rousing time on the ath and next year we should celebrate the 24 what an opportune time for the dedication di of a beautiful monument to the memory of the faithful men and women who tolled toiled so hard bard that the present generation might enjoy what we today are surrounded with this could be made the feature of a grand celebration and people from all parts of the county would assemble in this city to participate in the ceremonies there are only a were mere handful liand ful of ahn original pioneers left who were first to locate in this city most of those brave men and women have joined the great majority and gone to claim their reward true a monument would neither add to nor take from what they have accomplished but the rearing of such a mementos mc me mentoe would be of inestimable worth to those who erected it which would mean every man woman and child of this city it would speak of loyalty which fills the breasts of the sons and daughters it would tell the that this community appreciated the work of the founders it would be an incentive to our childrens children to follow in tile the footsteps of their noble progenitors who came here I 1 when ther ewas nothing but the howl bowl of the coyote the yell of the indian and the roar of the buffalo and lastly I 1 it would be the link which would bind th the ci citizenship of this I 1 ln in a chain ol of brotherly fellowship and love about the pioneers an exchange has the following to say walked across tho the plains almost every day the papers contain a report of the death oi of some aged man or woman here ill utah and almost the first statement after the tact fact of demise is that he walked across the plains or she was one of the liand band ot of pioneers who helped with the liand handcart eart brigade from the missouri rl ver to utah in and then follows the year tile the record will not be continued much longer those old men and old women are arc passing away and with them will go something absolutely unique in american history th those ose i I 1 immigrants must have had a sublime purpose a mighty hope a most alluring picture of 0 the lile life awaiting them in the distant wilderness they did nt expect to find a flowering garden of eden by any means they knew that labor and hardship would be their portion even when they reached the promised land but they mingled their religious aspirations with their i caily baily hopes and knew absolutely no limit to sacrifice or exertion and no matter what is the motive lor for a devotion of 0 that sort it builds character I 1 it makes the purpose tenacious the will resolute the spirit it builds fortitude and enriches courage people who pass pasa through such experiences as those ot of the aged men and women whose dying full of years yeara and or of honors Is ia now so frequently recorded in the papers are fit for or the battle of life no matter low how hard bard that conflict may be they certainly laid deep and broad the foundations ot of the commonwealth mon wealth and the children who come after them have a splendid inspiration spir atlon for all the loftier impulses of their own generation let us give the tribute of reverent honor to the veterans who have done their work who have left their example of tasks accomplished under tremendous difficulties let us honor them as they remain with us and bow the head in solemn sorrow as they tare fare to the great beyond now fellow citizens lets erect a monument rone one of which we will all be proud arid and have it ready tor for unveiling ve I 1 july illy 1910 |
