traveis vels veis I 1 left balt salt Lake city may liay the 1867 on a mission to the southern states to carry the gospel to my relatives and friend friends si who are scattered through several of them our company made a safe journey over the plains trains arriving at omaha indue lun iri due time altho aitho the indians indian were coni committing many depredations burning turning stations before and behind us at st louis I 1 bade adieu to my brother missionaries and pursued my way alone to kentucky where I 1 remained about ten days an and then passed on into tennessee where I 1 spent several weeks in the neighborhood of my birthplace birth place while in tennessee I 1 visited boro and saw baw the immense burial grounds of both the northern and South southern erli armies the sight was truly appalling I 1 next visited georgia and then alabama in wetumka wetumpka ala I 1 met id many ady old acquaintances and so numerous were the questions asked me that I 1 found it im impossible possible to answer separately so by invitation I 1 entered a large hall hali hall hali and publicly answered many questions relative to my cou country customs and religion my answers seemed to give general satisfaction allaying in a great measure their prejudices while in the city of ot montgomery alai had the pleasure of meeting a and I 1 id making the acquaintance of hon M B patton governor of alabama he politely invited me to ac company him to see the capitol building i it is a splendid edifice well suited to the purpose for which it was erected the governor was very affable he asked many questions about pres t byoung and utah i I 1 passed through alabama and went gent as far south as florida this warm climate did not a aree agree ree with me I 1 was soon stricken bilious fever ever this put an end to my labors labora for several weeks As soon aa as my health would permit I 1 baptized the tho lad iad lady at whose house I 1 stayed while sick leaving leaving her and two other families busily engaged preparing to gather with the saints began to retrace my step steps sand and visited most odthe of the neighborhoods in which I 1 had labored I 1 found one family nearl nearly ready to begin the journey I 1 baptized baptized four of its members Chrit christmas mas found me at my sisters in ky I 1 baptized her and her br two daughters and was busily engaged helping her to get ready for the journey until march at which time we left for omaha where I 1 hoped to meet other families that were trying to emigrate to the valleys we were detained at this place president brown placed me in charge of a small company of saints who had gathered at omaha on the of july we took the cars for laramie city here we awaited the foreign emigration then coining capt murdocks train we arria arrived ed at 1868 there la Is not that prejudice existing that I 1 expected to find against us as a people in the southern states yet the people are much demoralized and it tru ly failen appears that their best men have fallen in battle battie the country has a deso desoi i lato appearance bearing many of the marks of tb e late civil war great dissatisfaction prevails prevail 9 almost everyone overy every one is anxious to move but want of means prevents as land law 1 almost the only prop erty city left them will not sell in all afi my travels traveis tra vels veis I 1 meet with no noi persecution per se cution i was twice the subject of newspaper paragraphs warning the people to beware of thai thal mormon emissary who wild was trying to swell the domains of brigham young As a general thing the minds of the people are we so engrossed eng ossed with the tho political state of the country that they give but little heed to ie religion ligion traveling over so much country it was impossible to remain long iong in ai lace but I 1 sowed bowed good seed which I 1 hope hops will yet bring forth lucli much f ruit fruit in every place and on every available occasion I 1 bore a faithful testimony to the truth of the great lat ter day work going from house to tp house teaching the first principles of th the e gospel testifying that joseph smith sm th was a prophet of god aud and reason neason reasoning ng with the people on ou the truths of eternal ete r nal nai life many seemed interested listening attentively some acknowledged they believed it to be true yet obeyed not its commands a few gladly received the good tidings tid n s and were baptized an dea preva prevailed through the country that t the he church hurch would emigrate all who joined it and such is the dissatisfaction in the south that had I 1 favored this idea I 1 could have baptized many of a certain class for the sake of being emi grated who cared little or nothing for the truth I 1 thank my heavenly father for his watchful care during all my in y wanderings and I 1 acknowledge ins bis hand in all things it is truly refreshing to be again permitted to mingle with my brethren brethren in the kingdom af pf f god located in the valleys valley sot of the mountains your brother 1 T glo P 2 |
