conversed converged sed ped both parents and pupils express their satisfaction is at the manner in which the school is managed this institution supplies a want that has been long felt and it is is to bo be hoped that tb tho the 0 efforts of the chancellor and board of regents of the university to sustain it will meet with the cordial co opera tion of the public we have now the foundation laid for a first class college colle le if properly supported it will undoubtedly become all that we can desire and be bb a renowned seat of learning arrangements aro arc now perfected for teaching every desira able branch our young eo plo have facilities extended LQ to them which they should improve hn prove and upon which they cannot annot place too high a value it is not the intention to havo have the boots booi s of the university anh craty closed a portion of mhd tl year as has been thomaso tho case caso with many of our schools but tobe tobo k kept pt in operation continuously the advantages of this will bo be I 1 beadily perceived another ovil evil also will bo be avoided which ba hasi hasu j been a cause of serious complaint pupils will not bo be required to purchase new now text books every evely quarter in rn many ny of our districts there has been a now teacher almost every quarter and every teacher has had his pr preference eferen cc for some somo particular reader geography arithmetic ith motie motle etc these changes aro are ox expensive ansh to parents and discouraging to bupt pupils S under the system which has prevailed in many af our school districts it is not a mat ter of surprise that children become disgusted with their studies when a child is making fair progress say bay for instance in arithmetic and grammar the tho quarter ends and tho the school is closed sometimes for weeks when it is again opened anew teacher and ana with him probably new books or if the old books aro arc retained the child is put back to commence at the beginning and thus it frequently is until the v very name ot of arithmetic or brammar her fer ammar becomes hateful to the pupil added to this is the lack of interest or the lack of knowledge on the part of the teacher in many places when a man cannot do anything else ho he attempts attempt sto to teach school some people seem to have an idea that if a man cannot do any other useful work ho he can at least teach school if he cannot do that then he is utterly worthless of course whore where such views prevail it cannot be expected that school teaching is either cither profitable to the children or lucrative to the preceptor moreover let a man mau bo be ever ehr so capable if he only intends to pursue the profession profession of school teaching for a winter be 0 will not tako take the interest in his pupils that a man would who is a professional teacher and expects his pupils toa tox to emain remain with him through a regular course the latter is deeply interested in the progress of every pul pui pupil yil for upon their progress and ac acquirements acquire lir e m ments ants de depends ends his reputation ivi ITI wo 1 aro r 0 pleasetta plea piea pleased seTto to notice that the interest in throughout the territory the deseret university will soon we hope furnish teachers who will reflect credit upon their alma mater we have bave visited the university and we think professor park has a happy faculty of imparting knowledge in a simple interesting style grammar is made delightful by his system and wo we know that all his jils pupils of ordinary ability cannot fail to thoroughly master its intricacies that is if they have any disposition to learn it would be encouraging to the Profi professor asor anahis and his assistants acx and be of benefit to the pupils if our leading citizens would more frequently en vi visit I 1 the tho institution many of t the 0 young oung people are nervous and bashful ash A and the presence of strangers in the schoolroom roo e embarrasses barr asses them upon our visits we noticed some who if they had been alo aio with the teacher could have readily gone through their exercises I 1 but who were so nervous that they lost their balance became confused and could not answer questions which under other circumstances they could have replied to with ease knowledge is excellent bucit loses its principal value if the person possessing it cannot
