| Show TUB THE PACIFIC iaru laru bilier 4 THE citizens of this Terr territory itoi itol have nave been aware for many ai months past that a great rivalry has existed between enllie the two camp companies campan campau anies ies les who are ire building the pacific railroad as to which should finish the loil longest gest stretch of road before the tho lines meet causing each company i to make almost superhuman efm eff ortto push the work under its direction forward with the utmost dispatch As the theroan f road rodd neared completion this feeling in grew in intensity i especially mien anen me the graden grading parties of the two cefi corm corn pallia panics began to work side by side and at one time liine there appeared to be a great probability of both companies separate lines through the valley north n of ua us fro from ogden to the northern sho snores r e s of the great salt lake thi feeling 4 ultimately developed into I 1 charee charge ariy arid counter c hards charges being bling presented borbee bere congress asserting that the lines iines were e re not being built wilt accord according apio to 0 o the requirements quire ments of 06 the law which granted government aid to the build erso E the pacific railroad the union pacific company were charged with an inferior road with gambling gain I 1 0 wian the interests of the shareholder ol 01 q aich sich alch I 1 neglecting the require requirements men t aith government and with grading r a d far beyond eg the distance in 4 advance a of the comple compie completed ted tod lifie allowed them by y law Charge sor sor a like if not entirely similar natu nature 1 re were made against the central pacific company and congress was called upon to decide the points at issue the most important item however in in the dispute that concerned the people of this territory was where the joi jol jodat terminus of the two lines should roca toca be located boea foca ted it was certain to be somewhere in the vicinity of the gre great at salt lake either at ogden the bromont promontory ory near monument point or even west of that the central pacific had graded to ogden and were very anxious that their terminus should be therel there as by that means they hoped to secure a large percentage of the utah trade for california the majority of those interested in the union pacific road claimed that the termini of the lines should be wherever they met and as their line had long passed ogden they would probably have had the common terminus somewhere on the northern thore shore of the lake our readers will however see bythe by the bill that we published in our issue of the dinst that congress has decided that th the tho junction shall be at or near ogden w 1 or in the words of the bill provided that the common terminus of the union pacific railroad and the central pacific railroad shall be at or near ogden and the union pacific railroad company shall build and the central pacific railroad company shall shail pay for and own the railroad from the terminus aforesaid to a promontory summit at t which point the riis ails shall meet an and ana connect and form one con line ll 11 by which vee nie wo understand th that thal atthe the union pacific company will win have to sell to the central pacific all the road toad they have llave built north of ogden as far as the summit of the promontory tory lory and that there they will cease work whilst the central pacific will continue to move mone move eastward until they reach that same point where they will connect and form one line which line as far east as O ogden oden 0 den shall become the property of the latter company 1 for ourselves we deem this legislation eminently wise not only to quiet the difficulties that have existed between the two lines but also for the credit of the government an and aud d for the bake sake of bc economy onomy ogden is certainly the best place for the terminus its advantages are I 1 oar fa far r greater than any point for many ml miles ties on either side of it 1 t and we fully anticipate yet seeing it by far fai the most moat prosperous erous of an any of the cities that line the railroad track iu in its passage through the rocky bocky mountains bo so fr frai aa as regards the charges that have hive been brought against these companies the ath section of this same game billa bill provides ro viti viel e that the attorney general of the united states shall make a full investigation of the same and he is 14 empowered to institute all necessary an and d proper legal proceedings should he be discover cairer the same to be true either before a elvi or criminal court v a the necessities of the case demand other sections of the bill provide for the appointment of a board of five eminent citizens of the united states to examine and report the condition of the wo roads and also to report the sum they consider it will take to make the road first class through its entire length from the missouri to its western terminus the president is also authorized to withhold from either company such sums as will be required to make the road first class states until all t the interests rests
