Show LOGAN june editor deseret dear brother I 1 have no doubt but a few lines pertaining to the saints in cache valley will be of interest to your readers on arriving here I 1 met with president E T benson and bishop peter maughan n who received me with the greatest kindness in aness and felt to ask god to bless we lne on my mission to the quorums of high priests and the saints throughout the different wards in this valley 1 I have visited ten settlements held thirteen meetings and assisted in organizing gan izing three female relief belief societies all these meetings were well attended and the people felt to rejoice and according to my judgement jud gement there is a good people living in cache valley crops are looking well and bid fair for an abundant harvest this ia Is one of the most lovely valleys I 1 have seen in the mountains and is very inviting for farmers and mechanics it la age plain but a plain covered with good grass and grain I 1 must express my feelings and gratitude to the people where I 1 have traveled for the kind attention and hospitality they have shown to me on this little mission to the northern settlements which will be long remembered by me respectfully your brother in the gosp gospel 1 w t WM WU J SMITH PLEASANT GROVE utah co 1 june ath 1868 J editor deseret dearbo 0 ther the pleasant grove female relief belief society having previously collected together materials met at cur large hall today to day for the purpose of organizing putting together and making something valuable out of that which in a scattered condition had bad little or no value your humble servant attlein at the invitation vi of the sister bister elizabeth brown and sister neff one of other her counselors spent an hour in the afternoon very agreeably in looking through the esta establishment blish ment it would be a difficult task to describe the general frai fral appearance of the hali hail A bee hive is considered a busy place but there only one class of work is performed on this occasion I 1 found ninety two of our sisters all with busy hands employed some piecing idi ini quilts together some quilting uIl ull ting some carding batts batt some seome knitt knitting socks some making shirts some sewing carpet rags and some picking wool work commenced at 9 am and at 4 pm three quilts were completed and the fourth pretty well under way besides agrest amount of other work having been done this society was organized since april conference and has already been instrumental in doing much good in collecting provisions ions lons and ministering to the nee necessities e of the poor may god bless these sisters in their labor or of love yours ELIJAH MAYHEW VIRGEN CITY I 1 may 31 mr editor sir I 1 take my pen in i hand to record the event of the organization of a dimale female Relief Society in this one of the most remote kett iett settlements lemen ts of our dixie home it is an event which shows that the desires of the people to fulfill all duties obligatory and answer all calls made upon them by our worthy president A new organization has bas been instituted here from the bishop down to the deacons quorum which has given a new impetus to all the interests of the ward we expect that the name of Virgen city will yet denote a settlement of some importance according t to 0 previous i appointment meeting was held in the virgen city hall onafay on may bishop J parker opened the meeting and said that he had called the meeting to fulfill the desires of president young that the sisters should get together to organize female relief societies he called upon br robert 11 reeve to read the article on female relief societies from the DESERET NF NEWS VS brothers martindale and jepsen then addressed the meeting making makings some very a appropriate remarks after suitable remarks from bishop parker the following organization was effected mrs ellen park parker ir den tess mrs susan johnsoa John Joho sop sou first councilor mrs sarah wright second councilor miss alice parker secretary and treasurer several of the sisters were appointed as visiting committees everything went off in excellent order and the beat bestif of feelings prevailed G ISORA clerk |
