days dass all ali and thinking ti a few it items ems from this far 0 oft off country might be bO of some little interest to you I 1 veti veli ture to write a few lines for flor your perusal although I 1 lain laiu ahi ani rath rather e r a poor hand to communicate my P th thoughts on paper in n company with hr br john hoagland I 1 arrived in switzerland about tal the e last of august 1865 1863 we were welcomed by brothers will wm P and george B spencer at first we we ro entirely ignorant of the rapol aabol spoken en here could no not hot teVen beven even ask for the most simple though i in indispensable ne necessaries 1 to sus gus tain life but we found joad and kind friends wilo wiio who administered to ofir our wants we applied our minds tor to study the lord blessed us its and our efforts ani and alij we soon began to talk ii ft little though very slow and broken it was some weeks before we could attempt to speak in public anday and my first trial was a task for me yet I 1 hardly knew who had the most silfa cult task I 1 to speak a few words in broken and patched up sentences or the hearers to make sense of what was said and understand my meaning by diligence and practice the aties began to disappear gradually and I 1 became firmer as my knowledg knowledge g e in german increased but bt I 1 am still unable to converse as freely as I 1 should like to do nevertheless I 1 shall not complain but will rejoice in doing what I 1 can fro from m april until august of this year br hoagland and I 1 were the 0 only valley elders in this mission we did what we could for the good cause and were assisted by some good faithful native bi brethren ethren in august we had the pleasure of G maeser ma es and 0 ursenbach who had come to join us and we were very glad to see them during th the tho 6 last iasi two r months 66 I 1 have been traveling with br at bt visiting the several bran brau branches achs preaching visiting and instructing the sai sainta saints in their houses ac while we were io ozet oget gether together herour our oun course le led laiq us to ome some of the principal cities in switzerland erland anad abad we also saw irh irs beautiful lakes when we arrived at Land schlacht a small smail village oh oil the shores of lake constance br hoagland hoahland joined us antt tind while an on the h e way from thereto herisau Her ishu isau mut 20 miles walk were caught in a storm which reminded 44 us of january more than october however we made the trip all right this storm did considerable damage in edme some parts of east switzerland by breaking down fruit and other trees and causing a sudden freshet that injured factories and mill dams and soaked some cellars etc in some of the more mountainous districts a sharp frost killed many plants and gave ve vegetation quito Qan an autumnal appearance the grain and potato crops are light in some places hardly returning the seed hay bay and fruit crops aro are better than last year I 1 believe the cholera which has been raging in zurich has subsided but very few if any cases are heard of now As yet I 1 have not heard of a single case amongst the saints although some are living in houses which the epidemic has visited many were swept away by it the saints as a general thing feel well rejoice in the principles of the everi everl everlasting asti astl ng gospel and are anxious to gather to zion but they are poor and as times alehard and wages low many of them must have help or theyne they never neven er can gather they are anxiously looking and praying pr aying abing for help the brethren laboring with mein main this mission are feeling well and ic le in their labors we have all sorts of tales and prejudice sto contend with andee and we receive many striking testimonies of the truth while defending and spreading the same I 1 am happy to say bay that notwithstanding all ali opposition the work moves slowly onward tile the truth continues to spread and some are found who are honest and brave enough to believe and embrace it the principles of f the gospel of life and salvation are so io plain and simple that it often seems strange to us that people cannot understand it some consider atteo simple to have any weight or power they want something more wonderful startling langor or difficult to comprehend than the plain truth yet they will close their eyes to many wonders in this dispensation and look afi on them as a thing ol 01 naught i i L I 1 dmd find it less difficult to get to people ae lo 10 to a acknowledge that wa we teach bible nible 23 I 1 doctrine than to get them to believe and embrace the gospel the blindness and shadow of darkness which are upon the people is astonishing the clergy are also teaching and counsell counseling T they tell the people to beware of ithe t mormons cormons Mor mons we are a good for nothing yet dangerous set and they musk must keep out olour way ete etc notwithstanding all ail this and much more we lind find some bome who will receive our testimony and be numbered with the SaInt of god aa for mys myself elt elf I 1 rejoice in lit inthe the tho good work and desire to do all rill in my power for its furtherance the wicked may seo fcc scorn irn ridicule and howl but the thearin prin cip elp caples les ies of the everlasting gospel will bring brint all through safely who yield strict obedience 6 to them and to the servants of god I 1 am thankful that I 1 have coine coille here hero to defend the tho truth and gain an I 1 often think how howl many of or tny iny ny young brethren breter en almost shudder at tile the thought of i going on a mission lil ill and feel as if ia iwas wa s too hard a task yet yot god blesses blessed his ser servants and assists them continually and it is one offe of the best things that could happen to us yo young men when we are sent to labor in in the vineyard of our lord it is true we often feel weak but our heavenly father will help heip us as long as we are faithful to our trust and when we have him for our friend and assistant we are strong enough to this very every brother who has faithfully gaberel labereb in tile the ministry will I 1 think bear witness wit ness for they have experienced it themselves I 1 have already written to a consid considerable era length but before closing I 1 will say a few words relative to th the e saints corresponding r espo nul nur iding with their friends in 1 this thi 8 c country aunt ry many write very seldom or n not ot at afi ail al some write once in a while but something is written which is not hot well understood and which causes bur pur 1 misi migs as to their thein comfort freedom of the pen or their happiness some write occasionally asio nally and very good letters it is a rl pleasure to read them it would be a great help to the elders A source of satisfaction and comfort to many saints and friends here and a furtherance to the latter day work if the tha saints in utah would whitmore write writ more frequently not only to saints here but to their relations and friends thereby show showing ing them that they have the liberty to write when and as they please and also giving testimony 6 thatchat that thail what the elders eiders arenow are now proclaiming is the work of god and that they are not deluded or blindly led to some awful place of misery and ruin ever praying for the spread of righteousness an and the elfare welfare of the faithful I 1 subscribe myself your brother in the gospel JOSEPH 8 no horne hoane R n 1 WARI waru G S L cli ty december 10 1867 J E editor evening mewl jem iem jew I 1 am desirous of giving the public through your columns a description of the process of making matting in the east indies havil having ng fixed upon the tile dimensions they drive wooden stalo stakes into the ground at the two ends of the space an inch apart but I 1 would suggest a pole with nails driven in asdall cord is then tightly stretched from one end to the other forming parallel lines small rushes are woven in and pressed in wit with h a small smail bat when filled the edges are bound according to fancy with sheep skin skill or cloth and alyd the fag ends trimmed with shears such mats as these will last for years with care they would be ennd good substituted substitute sF for carpet where economy y is ai I 1 jh yours truly 1 WM arlis amt
