committee after the customary salutes at daylight and sunrise the national colors were hoisted upon the city flag staff and upon the principle stores then came a procession formed by the tho theAl marshai Marshal of the day isaac bullock the principal features in which were wore capt swedes well disciplined troops acting as front and rear guard u at the city territorial and federal officers M col nuttall and staff stass in full uniform form mounted the goddess Goddes of liberty in a triumphal car drawn by eight grays personated personate persona ted d by miss lilla daniels with grace and dignity thirty seven young ladies each carrying a banner with wi th the names of the various states inscribed thereon I 1 and nd one for deseret thirteen veterans in charge of capt M jones followed I then serenaded the town cap john D holla days company of major william mc me brides battalion assembled at half past 7 a in in full fall dress armed and equipped and went through their evolutions and drill in true military style at a quarter past 8 an escort waited upon the major and staff I 1 and escorted them to the ground at 9 am an escort waited upon david H holladay our president and his the city bishop william Williar ji maughan and other distin persons to the city hall where the declaration of inde independence indence was read and an excellent oration delivered by the orator of the day william F littlewood and a short but lively speech by the mayor after which were songs toasts sentiments ac in the afternoon after noan all came to the public square to amuse themselves which they did to their hearts content men women boys and girls from five to seventy years old some played at cricket some at others pitched quoits the ladies were out in force and enjoyed themselves amazingly everything E very thing went off with a charm not a drunken person was seen nor the smell of liquor felt all was good good order and peace the day concluded with a pleasant dance till twelve at night GUNNISON the TIA fourth of july at this place was celebrated by the citizens and the soldiers at fort gunnison the firing of musketry at daybreak by the infantry of gunnison and capt bidders BI iders infantry at camp awoke those enjoying their peaceful slumbers both at camp and fort at sunrise a national salute was fired by capt miles cavalry and the stars and stripes were hoisted to the breeze at a m quite a concourse of people assembled at the bowery and a procession formed under the direction of john E metcalf sen marshal of the day after marching through the principal streets and arriving again at the bowery all being seated the declaration of in independence dence was read by J E metcalf jun j u n and an oration was delivered byman by maj R F fraser eraser then came the song flag of our union by J 11 westwood We atwood an address by cap binder and song star spangled banner by thomas hunt followed by numerous patriotic sentimental and comic sons songs by iby different individuals the assem blage was then dismissed by the chaplain george hawley after a short intermission a sumptuous dinner was L provided by the citizens of gunnison and in the afternoon dancing commenced and continued until an early hour next morning the proceedings of the tho day and evening were conducted in a manner highly h creditable to all concerned chifu I 1 much C ak credit is due the committee of arrangements and the citizens of gunnison for their unremitting endeavors to promote the enjoyment of the company r CAVALRY MANTI As day broke three rounds of heavy beavy artillery were fired almost at the same instant a splendid new national flag purchased by the people of manti for the occasion was unfolded to the breeze while flags and banners were to be seen all over town bearing various mottoes appropriate to the occasion at six am major bartons command of infantry assembled in the public square and fired three salutes in honor lionor of each state in the union A salute was fired and three right hearty cheers given in honor of oar our worthy leader brigham young thereby showing to the few who are among us but butare are not of us how much the labors of that great patriot patrio t are known and felt and how much they are appreciated by this people ile ele the manti mantl brass and martial ands then serenaded the city at nine am a grand procession was formed on the public square headed by a body of cavalry under the command i of major george P billings I 1 was pleased to see eee how well these men were mounted and armed and how they have progressed in the knowledge of military discipline during the present summer under the direct direction loft of their off omm leens officers then came the manti brass band under br hans Westen scow seow his hon the mayor aldermen and coun cifors of manti city the martial band under br george snow two companies of infantry thirty six young ladies dressed in white with wreaths of flowers upon their heads the children belonging to the several schools with their several teachers captain banchs command of silver greys and another company pany of major billings command of cavalry brought up the rear of the procession the feeling to make each other happy and comfortable was manifest everywhere the procession passed through the principal streets and then retired to a comfortable bowery erected for the occasion at the instigation of bishop AJ moffat Alof mat fat when the people were all seated the band bana played in good style the star spangled banner after which the declaration of independence was read by F B R kenner and a very spirited and patriotic oration was delivered by john patten refreshments having been partaken partaker par taken of the people returned to the northeast part of town where there were sports of various kinds for prizes liberally donated by tuttle tattle fose peacock snow and other merchants in this city we had some of the best shooting done that has been done in manti it is
