Saturday morning you could see the players all over town, enthused about raising funds for their program. Assistant Coaches Henry Carter and Don Goff were there with them in the Crest parking lot, hoses and sponges and soap flying as the cars pulled in. Head coach for the team is Dennis Thomas, owner of Dumbbells Gym located on Main Street. Ive coached teams to the north for quite a few years, he tells us, so when Colby Knight (new head coach at PHS) asked me to help with the program I was glad to be able to say yes. Coach Thomas predicts rising enthusiasm for Payson football in the near future. Coach Carter, who played for UNLV two years and has lived in Payson, working construction, for the past seven years, notes that the ninth grade team last year had great success, ending up third in the league, so this years team has that to be guided by. This is my fourth year working with the program, he adds. The first game is Saturday against the Provo High Freshmen (ninth grade attends high school in Provo) at 10 a.m. Well be playing all 59 players in the games, points out Coach Thomas. Our reason for being here is to create a good learning experience for all the kids. Other assistant coaches include Denniss three sons Patrick, Brian, and Bob along with Lee Haskell and Kortney Kay. Coach Thomas has put up a fine web site for the team that includes a complete roster, schedules, and lots of other information. Youll find it at www.eteamz.compavsonfreshmenfootball. even better."
