It is better to arrive late than not at all. Clear windows of ice, snow and steam before you begin your trip. You need to see clearly when you are driving -- clearing just a peep hole is not enough. Fasten your safety belts and make sure that children and passengers are properly restrained. Avoid corners, as they are dead air spaces and most likely will not work. You can install smoke detectors on the wall 18 inches below your ceiling, but it will take them longer to detect the smoke because the smoke will rise to the ceiling and then slowly come down. 5. When you are hesitant to replace smoke detectors after 10 years of service, ask yourself one question, "Is my family worth a few dollars every 10 years?" 7. How many of you have smoke detectors going off while you are cooking dinner? Most smoke detectors have a feature that silences the smoke detector for a few minutes and then will return to normal operation. 8. Smoke detectors can now be tested with a flashlight so you do not need to climb to test them. 9. There are three types of smoke Who watches for fire in your home during the night? Most children believe that their parents watch for fire at night while they are sleeping. Most people believe that if they had a fire in their home they would wake up. In fact, this is not the case. In most home fires, the smoke and gases will reach you long before the fire will. The smoke and gases will put you into a deeper sleep, while at the same time starving your body of oxygen. Your body will accept carbon monoxide over 200 times faster than oxygen. Most smoke detectors will take over two minutes before they will go into alarm, which te means your fire has a head start. You can see from just a couple of reasons why it is important to have a good working smoke detector. Here are some pointers for smoke detectors: 1.
