ELBERTA Wednesday, October 8, 1997, Number 40 Volume 111 USP 424-16- 0 Local Student Receives National Recognition Miles Nielson, son of Robert and Margo Nielson of Payson, was chosen to receive an Exhibition Award from the Binney & Smith Crayola Crayon Company for the Dream-Make1997-9- 8 Art Conrs test Miles created a picture using Crayola products entitled "The Dragon." His picture was chosen from thousands of artistic creations submitted from students in the southwestern region, which in- cludes Utah, Arizona, Texas, Colorado, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Mississippi, Louisiana, and New Mexico. A jury of educators, knowledgeable and familiar with childrens art, selected 80 artworks to exhibit The works were selected on the basis of visual appeal, originality, craftsmanship, and the dream statements relationship to the artwork. The 80 chosen entries will be displayed at the Springville Museum of Art in November, which was chosen as one of three exhibition sites in the southwestern region. Miles is a seventh grade student at Payson Middle School. His picture was created in Mrs. Natalie Andersons English and Reading class as part of a unit on tall tales and imaginative stories. Frank Layden To Speak At Nebo Chambers Luncheon In Payson Frank Layden is planned to be the guest speaker at the upcoming Nebo Chambers Luncheon on Thursday, November 6, 12:00 p.m. The luncheon will be held in the Payson City Banquet Hall. PHONE 465-922- 1 5 0t Meet Your Candidates Night Thursday Evening The Payson Area Chamber of Commerce and the Payson Kiwanis Club are a Meet Your Candidate Night on Thursday evening, October 9, 1997, from 7:00 p.m. until co-hosti- ng 9:00 p.m. in the Payson City Council Chambers, 439 West Utah Avenue. Candidates will present their platforms and citizens will be given the opportunity to submit written questions to specific candidates. Questions from the floor will also be entertained. Mr. Doyle Buckwalter, Associate Professor of Public Administration from B YU, will be the guest moderator. Mr. Buckwalter has been a teacher and consultant for state and local governments and intergovernmental relations; has helped form business and government partnerships; is the author of numerous studies on municipal government modernization; has given extensive community service including strategic planning; economic development; education planning; member. Board of Directors of the Gathering Place Drug rehabilitation program; Scouting, and the recipient of the Arthur V. Watkins Outstanding Citizen Award." All interested voters are invited to attend this important evening. PHS Girls Soccer Nearing End Of Season With Success With only one more game left to play, Payson Girls Soccer team finds themselves in soul possession of second place following Timpview who is in first place. It has been a battle with Provo knocking the door to share second. This week the Lady Lions travel to Timpview for the final game of the season. Payson has had a great year with 9 wins and 4 losses. The defense was led by Becky Bigler as sweep, with fullbacks Miranda Moore, Jamie Pittman, Jill Williams, Amanda Wignall, Rebecca Mitchell, Julie Wall, and Lindsey Barrus, who have been one of the toughest defenses in the Region this year, only allowing 18 goals. STATE PLAYOFFS - October 14 and 16 Department Of Workforce Services Payson Employment Center Holds Open House On Tuesday, September 30, the Payson Department of Workforce Services Employment Center held an Open House. The creation of the Utah Department of Workforce Services is a bold and innovative effort aimed at consolidating all workforce functions, including what is commonly known as welfare, into one integrated service delivery system. The agencies being brought into the department are: The Department of Employment Security (Job Service); The Office of Family Support, which administers public assistance programs such as the Family Employment Program, Food Stamps and subsidized child care; The Office of Job Training, which coordinates all job training programs including the Job Training Partnership Act (JTPA); The Turning Point Program, which serves displaced homemakers by providing educational opportunities and other employment related services; and The Office of Child Care, which works w ith employers in the state to ensure that quality child care is available to those who are employed The Payson Employment Center is part of a statewide system of 48 Employment Centers created from 106 existing offices of the agencies being consolidated into the department.
