Participants now come from Payson, Santaquin, Spanish Fork, Springville, Salem, Oenola, Spring Lake, Covered Bridge Canyon, Elberta, Woodland Hills, Elk Ridge, Haskelville, Provo, and Salt Lake City. The one thing these people have in common is their love of playing fine music together. Four years ago a Youth Orchestra was added. Three year ago brought a novel concept a Suzuki Childrens Orchestra, ages three to ten. A Junior Orchestra was added in 1991, and an Advanced Children s Orchestra in 1992. This year a Seventh Grade Orchestra was added for those 6th graders who have heretofore been left out, plus the Lyceum Young Chamber Players, a very advanced childrens orchestra. Yet another group, the Cello Choir, directed by Christi Bristow, will add variety and excellence to the conceit. The teen orchestras this year have been divided between the Spanish Fork area with Sherrie Dunford as director, and the Payson area with Denise Willey, the founder of the Lyceum program, as director. These youth groups from the two communities will combine on this final concert for a thrilling effect Mrs. Willey has taught orchestra for over eleven years in the public schools, and currently teaches Suzuki students in her private studio. She holds a Bachelor of Music from the University of Utah, and has conducted and played in numerous orchestras and chamber groups throughout the state. She and her husband Donell are the parents of five children and reside in Payson. In July, the Lyceum Chamber Ensemble sponsored a unique event: a SoloConcerto Concert solo was welcome to play with the orchestra. About for students. Any student with a Audiences were treated with pieces ranging from the concerts. on two students performed twenty Suzuki Book I, all the way to a a perperforming the first piece in forming a Mozart Piano Concerto with full orchestra. Most students play in two orchestras, one in which to be really challenged musically, and on in which they can be leaders and helpers, with easier music. After several years of sweltering in hot auditoriums, it was decided to play an outdoor concert in the canyon. It will be well worth the drive up the canyon to be treated to a wonderful experience of classical music in a beautiful natural outdoor setting. Camp KoHoLoWo can be reached by driving up either Payson Canyon on the Nebo Loop Road, or Santaquin Canyon from Center Street in Santaquin. Follow the signs. Several groups will have a short rehearsal early on the morning of August 16th at the Middle School in Payson: Youth, 8:30 a.m.; Junior, 9:00 a.m.; 7th, 9:30 a.m.; the Childrens Orchestra rehearsal in the early afternoon at KoHoLoWo: 2 p.m., Lyceum Young Chamber Players; 2:30 p.m., all three Childrens Orchestras; 2:45 p.m.. The first part will begin at 4:00 p.m. After the first conceit there will be time for families to enjoy each other and the outdoors with apicnicdinnerbreak. The second part of the Grand Concert will begin at 7:00 p.m. Marilyn Hales, featured viola soloist, has had many years of experience performing on violin and viola with several orchestras, including the Utah Symphony, the Kansas City Philharmonic, die Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the Utah Valley Symphony. She has taught as an adjunct professor at BYU, and currently teaches private lessons in her home in Spanish Fork. Marilyn has acted frequently as an adjudicator for various solo string and orchestra competitions. She and her husband Ernest M. Hales have a real estatefinancial planning business in Spanish Fork and are partners with their sons in their law offices in Southern California. They are the parents of 5 children and have 21 grandchildren. Laura Viola Ferry, featured soloist, is the daughter of Margaret and Ben Ferry. She began studying violin at age two with Diane Austin and has continued her musical training since age four with Deborah Moench. She has participated in the Suzuki Intermountain Institute Summer Camp for five years and has performed in Symphony Hall at various Suzuki concerts. She also performed a concerto with the Westminster College Chamber Orchestra last May. Laura and her sister Michelle, age five, and a cellist, enjoy sharing their music often at local nursing homes, civic and church functions. She and her family live on a farmcattle ranch in Corinne, Utah. Anthony D. Willey, featured soloist, son of Mr. and Mrs. Donell J. Willey, began violin lessons at age 3 12. He has received five consecutive superior ratings in the ASTA-BYStrings Festival, and plays in the Lyceum Young Chamber Players. Anthony also enjoys piano lessons with Marlene Bachelder and was privileged to perform this summer a "Recital on the Town" in Salt Lake City as part of the Gina Bacchauer Piano Competition. He studies violin with his mother and Jeanne Grover.
