She also points out that the winning raffle ticket will be drawn on May 19 th rather than May 9th, as was listed by mistake in last week's article. The raffle is one of the methods being used to finance the costly operation of building this year's elaborate float, designed by Daryn Goodall. Mrs. Van Ausdal notes the raffle tickets are being sold door to door in Santaquin, or can be bought at Davis Home Center or Super Quik. The raffle prize is a gas barbecue now on display at Davis Home Center. Mrs. Van Ausdal says the town has been divided in fifths for purposes of selling the raffle tickets. First, the town has been quartered through Main and Center Streets, then the subdivision and other homes south of the freeway constitute the other fifth. Lana Lafferty is in charge of tickets in the subdivision area, Rocky Lamb has the southwest quarter, Cauleen Olson the southeast area, Laurie Peay the northeast area, and Dawn YV&renski the northwest area. Dorine Wfcll and Susan Armstrong are in charge of contacting local businesses for contributions. In addition to the contributing businesses listed last week, the following have joined in to help the cause: Mayor Sandra Armstrong, left, and Santaquin Float Committee Donnie Hathaway volunteered the carpentry work in rebuilding the members Daryn Goodall and Deanne Van Ausdal stand next to the wagon, which had deteriorated over the years, rebuilt wagon that will be the base of the Santaquin Float. Checketts resigns as councilman Newell Checketts has resigned his seat on Santaquin City Council in order to fill a mission for the LDS Church. The City Council has accepted his resignation and is now considering Flannery O'Connor left some of the strongest religious statements in modern American literature before she died of an incurable disease a few years ago. Her novel WSE BLOOD shows a man trying so hard to convince himself that Christ1 does not exist that he actually gives substance to the reality of Christ. Three violent acts in the novel reveal his inner struggle. First is his destruction of "the a shriveled new Christ," mummy which has been carefully drawn by O'Connor as a symbol of the nothingness modern man has substituted for Christ. Hazel Motes, the main character, has been trying to accept this nothingness, and is appalled by the figure when it is presented to him by a young girl as "her child." Because his inner nature cannot accept this substitution of nothingness for he takes the little Christ, mummified man with squinted eyes and dashes it to pieces against a wall. His most violent act toward a human being is really a symbolic Hoover Shoats has hired a "Prophet" to dress up like Motes and drive a car like his in order to make money from converts to the promising new religion without Christ. Motes destroys this parody of himself by running him over, saying, "Wiat do you get up on top of a car and say you don't believe in what vou do believe in for?" Then, after this symbolic he physically destroys himself by putting but his own eyes with lye. His'last acts are ancient ones of penance self-sacrifi- Youth Council suggested appointing a replacement. Santaquin City Recorder Sam Sellers reports that Checketts was called to the Wyoming Cody Mission and has already left. Checketts was an appointed councilman, having serveid since last January. He served on the Planning and Zoning Committee from July, 1980, till his Council appointment. His Council duties have included city crew supervision, inventory of fixed assets, and streets, interhighways governmental liaison, Mountain-land- s Association of Governments liaison, and UVIDA liaison. Acting Santaquin City Police Chief J im Guynn has suggested to City Council that Santaquin institute a City Youth Committee somewhat along the same lines as the one now operating in Payson under the direction of Mildred Olson. Guynn will be inquiring into the details of such a committee and report back to the Council later. The Youth Council in Payson handles cases in which juvenile offenders prefer having a panel of their peers judge their situations rather than appearing before a judge in juvenile court. In the Youth choosing Committee over the juvenile court, the offender must admit his guilt first. At least, that is the way the Youth Council operates in Payson. Last year, the Payson Council handled 88 cases. Members of the Council are youth who receive no pay for their services. Santaquin Council places moratorium on signs During the May 5th City Council Meeting, Santaquin City Council placed a moratorium on installing signs in Santaquin. The moratorium was set for sixty days, during which time the City will look into the. adoption of a sign ordinance to be added to the City's Zoning Ordinance. blood pressure to vital organs), a (a folding scoop portable specialized stretcher that prevents lifting a victim dangerously), and traction splints. said Ursulich these basic supplies cculd cost over $2,000.
