Dr. Tanner teaches at Brigham Young University and is a family councilor. He spoke on the subject of "Depression". "It is not the fact or the event that causes depression, but the way you think about it. Human beings can alter their lives by altering their minds. Negative emotions can be changed by a self help mental process." Dr. Tanner has a self help course available through Independent Studies at B.Y.U. The enjoyable meeting was held at the home of Joyce Provstgaard. She and Joyce Manwill were hostesses for the evening. Rummage Bake Sale in J ennifer Lynn Prince, daughter of Max and Brenda Prince, will celebrate During the six months the family was there, they lived in an apartment in Austria. They rented a Volkswagon and toured the other countries extensively, including some countries behind the iron curtain. One of Barbara's first observations after arriving was the European's appreciation for beauty. It was a very common on the sight to see passers-b- y street carrying fresh flowers. Despite the extreme cold months, people carried fresh flowers, even if they were just going to a friend's home to visit. In our country the custom of stringing tin cans on a "Just Married" car was replaced in Europe by fresh flowers. The cultural awareness of the people was impressive, also. Each town, no matter how small, had its own symphony, and it was by the local townspeople. Another interesting but somewhat depressing aspect of their travels was their trip to Czechoslovakia and Hungary. From the moment they stepped into the country there was a constant reminder of the military force that prevails. Each time they were stoped at the border they were surrounded by guards with machine guns. The iron curtain countries on the whole were rather backward. Steam trains were still in operation, wagons pulled by horses were employed in the fields, and many homes had no indoor plumbing. her first birthday Friday, November 13, 1981. Barbara said she got her eyes opened on how the people hate Communism and how they are constantly being watched and how, on the whole, they were a very depressed people. The Wbrthens felt an overwhelming atmosphere of relief just after crossing the border out of Czechoslovakia. Much of their other traveling included guided tours, visiting castles, cathedrals, museums and bartering in the open air markets. Naturally, no trip is complete without the food. Whether it was eating paella (rice, chicken and seafood dish) in Spain, pasta in Italy or shishkabobs in Greece, sampling each of the ethnic specialties was fantastic. Barbara and Lee are the parents of three children, ages 1, 3 and 6. Barbara teaches preschool in her home and professionally decorates cakes.
