Show I CHRONICLE SPORTS & RECREATION Wednesday, August 19, 1981, page TIe 9 2ttronidt Papon Goshen wins consolation in close game against Nephi Sat. Goshen won the consolation championship at the Santaquin Tournament for Pony League Saturday by edging Nephi 2 in an excellent ballgame for both teams. The game was very cleanly played by both teams. Ramon Renteria and Pino Ureste were the standouts for Goshen. Ramon was the starting pitcher for the Orioles and allowed only two base runners in the three complete innings he pitched that was on a walk and an error in the second inning. Pino hit a solo home run in the top of the second for Goshen's first score, and he struck out nine batters pitching 3-- i , ' the final four innings of the game. The only other hits for Goshen besides Pino's home run were four singles, one each by Manuel Ruiz, James Davis, Rodney Kirk and Kyle Bigler. All of Nephi's scoring came in the bottom of the fourth inning. Curtis Parks opened with a single to right. Brent Bowles scored him i with a triple to center, and pitcher Darren Bender brought him in (with a single before Goshen pitcher Pino Ureste retired the side with three straight strikeouts. By the time Nephi scored these two runs, Goshen had already ; i i ! scored their three. In the third, James Davis had singled to left center, followed by a walk to Kyle Bigler. Simon Ureste reached first on an error to load the bases; then Pino Ureste grounded to short and a Nephi throwing error in a try for a double play resulted in two runs scoring; so Pino's bat played a part in all three of Goshen's runs. The first inning promised a pitching duel as both sides were retired one, two, three. Pino's home run opened the second inning, and Manuel Ruiz collected his single next; but Manuel was left on base as Bender struck out ; the next three Goshen Orioles. Renteria faced five batters in the bottom of the second, the fifth batter left at the plate as Kyle Bigler, the Goshen catcher, threw out a Nephi runner trying to steal third. After Goshen scored its next two runs at the top Of the third, Nephi once more went down quickly to Renteria's side arm on two fly balls and a grounder back to the pitcher. In the fourth, Rodney Kirk led off with a single but ended up stranded on third as the inning ended. Pino came in to pitch in the Both James Davis and Kyle Bigler reached base for the Orioles in the seventh, Davis on an error, Bigler on single to center, but nothing came of it. Pino ended the game with three strikeouts in the bottom of the seventh. The game was sweet in the game thereafter. In the fifth, Pino was the only Goshen batter to reach base, this time on a walk. The first Nephi batter in the bottom of the inning made first on an error, but Pino struck out two and the final hitter revenge for Goshen. Nephi had defeated them twice in the course of the regular pony league season, and had been the league champions, losing only to Santaquin in league play. It only goes to show how competetive the league really was. grounded out to second to end the inning. The sixth, like the first, saw .three quick outs for both teams. Bender struck out two, Pino one. Gordy Junes kept the Eureka bats relatively silent, giving up just three hits in those same three innings. Randy Rupper ripped the ball for a triple in the first inning and a double in the second, and reached base on an error in the third. He scored in all three innings, as did Danny Mecham, who hit two singles and reached base on a fielder s choice. Eureka showed signs of keeping up with the Payson bats in the first inning, however, as Robert Grill, the third batter, doubled to right center, then scored on a single by Brad Renzello. But Eureka stranded two on base after that and Payson scored six runs in the second and five in the third to put the game out of reach. Goshen blanks Payson Giants The Goshen Orioies defeated the Payson Giants in a second round consolation game played Friday at the Santaquin Tournament in the Pony League division. Simon Uriste pitched all seven innings for the Orioles while Brian King went all the way for the Giants. Final score was Goshen stretched a 20 lead to 50 in the bottom of the fifth as the Giants were plagued by throwing errors. None of the three runs scored that inning were 5-- earned. Although the Giants managed two singles in the top of the sixth, the runners were stranded to end the threat. Leo Maestas, a recruit from the little league ranks, led off the inning with a single to right field and Brian King beat out a throw from shortstop for an infield single; but pitcher Simon Uriste handled the next two plays to end the inning. He fielded a pop fly, then scooped up a King grounder and tagged coming home. Goshen threatened more runs in the bottom of the sixth when both Federico Darodo and Rodney Kirk hit solid singles to start the inning, but Payson turned a classic double play and threw out Darodo trying to steal home on a pass ball to stop any scoring. With one more chance at bat, the Giants got a base runner first thing as Ryan Finch singled to right, but Goshen ended the inning with three straight ground outs to go into the consolation championship game Saturday against Orem or Nephi. Elberta All-Sta- rs As earn narrow One of the most exciting games of the Santaquin Tournament was a game between the Sox and the Blue Santaquin Elberta A's in the little league division. Having finished second in the South Nebo League, the A's were favored by many to win the game. But the Blue Sox came up with some fine offense to keep up with their Elberta counterparts. The game went over the limit in the fifth inning, and Juan Ruiz hit a double to left center that brought in the winning run. Elberta earned its way to the champion semi-fin- Kevin Aitkens, Jeff Spencer, Thad Loader, and Brian King picked up singles for the Pony while Tony Terranova, Scott Hurst, Steve Hiatt, and Mike Holman each got one hit, and Bob Armstrong and Danny Money got two hits each for the al hour-and-a-h- bi ship game with the Payson A's Saturday with a 4 score. The Santaquin Blue Sox went ahead 2 in the top of the fifth on a single by Chris Talley, a double by Kelly Voorhees, and a single by Steven Sames. Elberta pitcher, Luiz Ruiz, who came in to pitch at the start of thte fifth inning, fanned three other Santaquin batters in the inning. Kelly Voorhees hit two doubles and batted .500 in the game with one rbi for the Blue Sox. Steven Sames helped the Sox, too, with a double and a single and two rbi. Brett White of the Goshen Astros hit After winning 10-- 0 over the Orem Astros in the first round of the Santaquin Tournament Pony League Division, the Santaquin team had to bite the bullet against Spanish Fork and Salem on Friday and Saturday. . A shaky start full of walks and errors in the first inning gave Spanish Fork a 0 jump without getting a hit in the first inning Friday. By the end it was 15-- 5 for Spanish. The next day against Salem the team recovered some of its opening-da- y composure, and Satt Ellsberry struck out seven Salem hitters; but the Salem Astros pulled out an 4 victory to take third, leaving Santaquin fourth in the tournament. 8-- 5-- Softball tournament Payson City Recreation Director Phil Anderson reports that Payson City will conduct a slow-pitc- h softball tournament in conjunction with Golden Onion Days Celebration, September 5. : ; The tournament will be double with elimination twenty-fou- r teams from all over Utah County competing.
