SUBSCRIPTION year. are EDITORIALS Hurt Selves, Community 'Away Shoppers When the state legislature earlier this year mandated Utah cities and counties to increase the local option sales tax by a quarter of a per cent or lose the half per cent they presently collect, it was suggested the increased revenue might be used to lower property taxes. Payson and Santaquin have acted to boost the sales tax. This Shane Callaway newspaper believes both city councils made a wise decision. Now The Chronicle believes each resident of those communities should make a decision himself which would be every bit as wise. It is this as this newspaper has advocated so strongly and repeatedly in the past shop at home! That recommendation, however, should be tempered to some The Chronicle to insist degree. It would bepresumptousfor alike spend their money in Payson its readers and or Santaquin regardless of other circumstances. But the newspaper does not believe it oversteps its bounds if it suggests its readers give Payson or Santaquin merchants an opportunity to match the price for comparable merchandise offered by businessmen from outside those cities. For if the consumer does not do that, he is cutting off his nose to spite his face. Every dollar spent outside Payson or Santaquin means half a penny for the city in which that dollar was expended. Almost of a penny after June universally, it will mean 30 for those same cities. Now Orem, as an example, does not contributeone single cent to maintenance, for instance, of Payson or Santaquin streets. Payson or Santaquin residents are foolish if they contribute to the cost of maintaining Orem streets, especially if all other things being equalthe sales tax money they contribute in Orem could just as well be contributed in Payson or Santaquin. When readers or buy in Payson or Santaquin, they are contributing directly or indirectly to tile cost of government m those cities. When they contribute to the cost of government, they do one of two things they either lower other taxes or they help finance improved municipal services. This newspajier suggests readers and keep that in mind the next time they leave their towns to shop. non-read- Shane Callaway, sonofMrs. Shirl Beddoes of Spring Lake and Walter Callaway of Santaquin, has enlisted in the US in Army and is stationed Mannhiem, Germany.
