Con- January 4th, 1896, Utah gress refused every time. The Utah people, the majority made up of Mormons, wanted the right to manage their own economic affairs. Politically, Mormons believed in majority rule. Immigration felt that America was a freedom to all. Education taught skills and religion to all. Polygamy- - Mormons felt it was a religious duty and a Constitutional right. Crusaders against Mormons felt if they were loud in denouncing the Mormons, there would be no statehood til the Mormons conformed. Utah would stay a territory. In 1887, the Edmunds Tucker Act dissolved the corporation of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-da- y Saints, meaning Congress would take away all the church properties. In 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed the Enabling Act. Utah was invited to join the Union. Cleveland was issued pardon, giving back the civil rights to the polygamists. Church leaders got back the civil rights to the polygamists. Church leaders got back their properties. January 4th, 1 896, President Grover Cleveland issued a proclamation: "Utah admitted to Union as 45th State. For Utahns it meant Mormons were heard and accepted. Mormons and for peace and the future." would work After President Clevelands telegram was received, Western Union (with permission from the police department) fired two shots, hundreds gathered, businesses closed, crowds shouted and shook hands, and the Utah National Guard marched to Capitol Hill and fired a 21 gun salute. On January 6th, 1 896, Inauguration took place at the Salt Lake Tabernacle on Temple Square. The Denhalter Band and Tabernacle Choir furnished the music. The 6 12-fotree was adorned with ornaments of pink and gold and laced with garlands of beads and iridescent ribbons. The Christmas Tree is a yearly raffle. Funds raised are used toward education scholarships. Jackie is no longer a stranger at Mountain View Hospital; in fact, she serves as a volunteer in the Auxiliary organization. But never had she anticipated winning the tree she had admired for a month and helped decorate.
