Show The Payson Chronicle, April 3, 1991, Page 9 Army Of Volunteers To Begin Annual Cancer Crusade Drive April Eighth In Payson An army of hundreds of volunteers throughout the Payson area will ask for a contribution at every home and leave a pamphlet entitled The Great American Food Fight Against Cancer" as they launch the annual Cancer Crusade Monday, April 8. Laura Betts of Payson, a licensed practical nurse at Mountain View Hospital and Crusade area chairman of the American Cancer Society, said there is a definite link between eating habits and incidence of cancer, and the pamphlet gives details on what families can do to have a healthier life. "Diet is suspected as an important cause of as much as 35 percent of all cancer deaths, and research continues to uncover more information on which foods may help reduce caricer risks," she pointed out. The pamphlet being distributed during die Cancer Crusade also lists how families can fight cancer through diet: 1 Watch your weight; 2 Cut down on total fat intake; Eat more high-fibfoods; 4 Eat fruits and vegetables rich in vitamins A and C, and choose more cabbage-famil- y alcohol if you drink; 6-- Eat d, less vegetables (some are also high in vitamin A or C); foods. smoked, and nitrite-cure- d "Funds donated during the Crusade will be used for a variety of programs sponsored by ACS," Betts said. "These include public education, research, patient services, community services, and professional education. Only eight percent is spent on management and general costs." Funds going to research help in finding new cures through highly trained scientists and laboratory facilities throughout the United States, she said. More than $86 million was allocated by ACS for cancer research in 769 university and other research facilities last year. 3-- er imit salt-cure- Sophomore Baseball Team Report "We just need to put a whole game together," said PHS Sophomore Baseball Coach Chad Beck after his team returned from Las Vegas with two losses then lost on Monday in a squeaker to Lehi. "As a team, we hit the ball well; we just hit it right at people," he lamented. The team lost 6-- 4 and 6--9 at Vegas, both losses because of giving up one big inning. "Cory Harris hit the ball well in the first game, and so did Mike Alba. Brian Gull did a good job pitching. In the second game, Orlando Corona and Mike Butler were the big hitters, getting a couple apiece. Jayman Taylor pitched well the first inning and Ryan Partridge was excellent in relief, going five complete innings and giving up only one hit," reports Coach Beck. On Monday night, the sophs lost to Lehi Taylor pitched and gave up only two earned runs. "Our infield played exceptionally well," Coach Beck points out. "Corona had six put outs from his third base position, and Cory Harris had an outstanding defensive game."
