The deputy got there a few seconds before I did. There were people in the corner, and I was told there was still someone in there. I bumped into the deputy twice. He also received an award from the Utah County sheriff, thanking him for service above and beyond the call of duty. Playing down his effect, Tom expressed that everyone would have done the same thing. Everyone is a hero. People help when they are first on the scene of a car accident or all fires, or any time-th- ey take risks to help. A hero is someone who can live and get through life, and be there when someone needs help, he said. On another occasion, while Tom was doing his duty, he again helped the citizens. He is happiest when he is helping others. Tom has been influenced by his fellow officers, especially Sergeant Mike Openshaw. "Hes a great man to learn from and he teaches me. Ida Mae Runyan, Toms grandmother, also taught him about life. She has a great sense of humor, she is funny. And her memory is as clear as a bell, he said. Openshaw expressed his esteem for Tom. "He is intelligent and has a strong desire to help others. He is a very he said. He good officer, knows the law very well and what he reads, he knows and remembers. He is a good friend and easy to get along with. Tom Runyan is a hero, but he doesnt believe it. He is an example, but he wonders why. He doesnt like to talk about himself, and would rather just do his job in an unassuming and dutiful way. Those he gives tickets, he evaluates and would rather they just obey the law. When people want you there, you need to get there in a hurry, but they dont want you when things are going well.
