My mother says the Red Devil was picked as a mascot for Springville High because they used Red Devil cement in the foundation when the high school was first built. They decided on that name because the cement was hard, tough, and industruct-ablThat was the message from someone among the hundred or so people who gathered at the Nebo School District Board Meeting last Thrusday to argue on behalf of keeping the Red Devil at In the Springville High. previous board meeting, a Springville woman had called for the Board to abolish the same Red Devil. Apparently, all the hundred people present last Thursday had come in support of the mascot as is, and when the dust had cleared, the Board voted to make no change at Springville High. (5ijC cally word its motion to say that it approved of the Red Devil as the schools mascot, but the Board felt that was unnecessary and Board Member Marlin Boyer worded his motion to the effect that the Board had no intention of making a change in the Springville High mascot. Board President Clyde Swenson noted that the School Board had never received so many letters on any one issue as it has on the Red Devil issue. Its been a very emotional thing, and other school boards here have been caught up in it at one time or another. Usually, this kind of thing is left up to the community. board Marlin Member Boyer, who lives in Mapleton, said early in the meeting that he felt it was not a real issue. J. Collin Allan, another Board Member from the Springville area, stated he had graduated as a Red Devil from Springville High but the idea of the mascot being somehow negative or evil had never occurred to him, though five or six years ago someone had asked his opinion on the subject.
