Show League Play Launched - Cougars End Drought With Homecoming Victory Over Miners KEARNS. Coach Bruce Takeno entered a winning locker room for the first time in his career as a head coach Friday. And it felt great. Despite having been a part of the program at Judge during some of that schools glory years, Takeno said Fridays solid 4 victory over Bingham was the biggest win hes ever been associated with. he Boy it felt good, acknowledged. 21-1- For Takeno the breakthrough ended a loss streak of a dozen games and for Cougar teams the setbacks had reached IS straight. Fridays win couldnt have come at a better time. Not only was it the opening of league play for the Cougars, who now have a share of first place, it was Homecoming. And Bingham was coming off a shutout vic- tory over defending state champion Skyline, now coached by former Cougar mentor Gil Cordova. How long the Cougars can stay undefeated in Region Two will be determined at 3 p.m. tomorrow (Friday) when Kearns invades Brighton. The Bengals are not a happy football team after suffering back-to-bac- losses to k Layton and Alta after being labeled the team to beat for 4A honors this season. Brighton belted Olympus 45-- for one of its wins. Oly handed Granger a 27-- 0 setback Friday. And while Takeno doesnt know exactly what to expect, he expressed no fears about meeting the Bengals. We knew they were good at the seasons onset. We will worry more about our own execution than about how good they are. And well just hope for the best, the Cougar mentor said. It might be assumed that the Miners were 0 flat going into Fridays encounter at Kearns. And conversely, the Cougars might have While the Cougars didnt roll up impressive statistics, they simply didnt give Bingham opportunities to score. In the meantime, the Cougar defense bent some, but it refused to break. While Bingham had the edge in total offense, the Miners also coughed the ball up to set up what proved to be the winning score and made a serious mistake in the kicking game. That Bingham wasnt flat seemed true when pro the Miners Molinaro Scott gained 42 yards on the first play from scrimmage. That set up a Rod Gust keeper that posted the visitors to an early 0 lead. However, Terry Fritz caused a fumble in Cougar territory and Bob Bates celebrated his return to action with a recovery. Five plays later, after 15 yards had been stepped off against the Cougars for holding at the four, Kasparian rifled a pass to Marc InSwedish exgram. change student Lars 7-- Juhl threaded the uprights for a 7-- 7 tie. The Cougars put another score on the board when the defense forced the Miners to punt into the wind from their own end zone. An rush unnerved the kicker, who shanked it off his foot at the 11 and after picking up a first down at the one, n the kept Kasparian pigskin and Juhl was true once again. In the third period the rejuvenated Cougars marched 69 yards, with Kasparian hitting Ingram on a third and 25 for one first down and Shayne Terry carried the ball most of the rest of the way, scoring on a plunge of less than a yard.
