Kennedy I Lets shed some light on electricity bills! Whos paying what and why? Misconceptions can cloud public thinking as states consider electric rates. Lets look clearly at some of the facts: No. Darrell Rowberry Up i 1: Homeowners are subsidizing industrial electricity use. Fact: Residential elec tricity consumers are not paying more for electricity so industrial consumers can get a bargain rate. In fact, in most cases, its the other way around. Studies show that power companies earn a higher return rate on invested capital from industrial customers than from residential ones. If industrial customers didnt provide such good revenues for utilities, the utilities would have to get the revenues from homeowners. Misconception No. 2: Industry gets bargain or promotional electric rates. Fact: Rates are based on the cost of providing service to each class of consumer industrial, commercial, residential. Large users often pay lower unit prices because it costs less to bring a kilowatt hour of electricity to a large user (such as a factory) than to a singlefamily home. Misconception No. 3: Penalizing industry would help people. Fact: If every customer paid the same for every kilowatt hour of electricity used industry would pay rates substantially higher than the cost of providing their service. The higher rates to industry would be passed on to everybody who buys industrial goods and services. Money saved on the light bill would be lost on the bills paid for food, clothes, other consumer items and transportation. Misconception No. 4: Large industrial users are to blame for peak demands for electricity. Anthony (Doroths A;. Thomas, and Bonn'- - f Row-berrDarrell died Feb. 24, 1980, in a Granger Hospital. A few hours later they were joined by a team of claims adjusters who immediately organized an emergency storm center.
