Show tVU.l THE 4 MAGNA TIMES THE VALLEY VIEW NEWS THURSDAY FEBRUARY 2 M f & 0 TAXES: Your taxes will go up sharply if Granger-Hunte- r incorporates. Proponents make lots of promises. government costs are presently shared with tax payers all over the Salt Lake Valley. Inresidents corporation means Granger-Hunte- r ALONE must pay the full costs of their taxes. Your property taxes will go up more than $200.00 a year if the proposed city maintains the present level of services you are already receiving from YOUR Salt Lake County Government. Local O QUALITY OF SERVICE: It is IMPOSSIBLE for the proposed city to provide the quality of service you NOW enjoy as a resident of Salt Lake County. For example, FIRE PROTECTION would deteriorate. Your fire insurance would go up. POLICE PROTECTION would suffer. The quality of law enforcement would deteriorate. PARKS and RECREATION cannot possibly afford the level of service now provided by county-wid- e taxes. Proponents ADMIT the new city is COUNTING on Salt Lake County for backup in police protection, fire protection, etc. And proponents of incorporation admit they are counting on Salt Lake County to provide very favorable contracts for services while the new city gets going. THIS IS ILLEGAL. THE COUNTY CANNOT PROVIDE SERVICES AT LESS THAN ACTUAL COST TO CITIES. No subsidy will be available to Granger-Hunte- r by recent decision of the Utah Supreme Court. And we have shown above that the proposed new city JUST WON'T HAVE THE RESOURCES TO MAINTAIN THE QUALITY OF SERVICES YOU NOW 0 ADEQUATE Proponents of in corporation have juggled their figures to make their budget look like it will cost about the same TAX BASE: or even less than what you pay now for your County government. They say the new city can operate on 10 mills. We have shown above that this is IMPOSSIBLE without outside sources of money or subsidy, or without sharply cutting back on services, or both. The truth is, no one knows how much the new city will cost. The ONLY FACT ANYONE CAN BE SURE OF IS THAT IT WILL COST A GREAT DEAL MORE THAN PROPONENTS ARE TELLING PEOPLE. Two or three times more. Our best estimates are that the proposed new city will cost you much more in taxes for a lower level of services. Proponents argue that the proposed new city will bring the government "closer to the people" and provide a more responsive government. As we have shown will be trading above, residents of Granger-Hunte- r i s - I t i , r k ELEVEN ELECTED OFFICIALS AT PRESENT FOR SIX ELECTED OFFICIALS IN THE PROPOSED NEW Further, creating the new city doesn't do away with Salt Lake County government. It just adds one more layer of government and one more tax load on residents who are already CITY. Some of us in Granger-Hunte- r honestly wonder if we can afford such a representative government!
