Hansen Water conservation is a serious subject in Utah this year, and we think it is a great idea to prepare water conservation workbooks for use in the public schools However we do have some reservations about the taste used in the comic book style workbook approved by the State Board of Education for use by fourth, fifth and sixth grade students Not only is the material in several places in poor taste, but we wonder why this age group, which generally consumes very little water, was singled out to be the group taught to calculate rate of water loss and to be lectured on the wisdom of washing full loads of laundry Good grief' Ten year olds generally hav e a natural aversion to water It takes all of the energy a parent can muster just to get a child this age into a bathtub or anywhere near a sink full of dishes Theres little danger of their getting carried away with water consumption No we re not say mg not to teach water conservation to this age group, w e just hope those in junior and senior high w ill be leceiving water conservation material too What we do ob ject to in the water conservation workbook Captain Hydro appears on page five of the booklet There, a housewife is depicted as a chunky, shapeless slob with her hair up in tollers sloppy slippers on her feet and a cigarette dangling from her big mouth This caricature of a woman in a laun dramat does nothing for the story and is simply demeaning Also on page five is the statement unfortunately, a stuck We fail pants zipper delays our hero for about 10 minutes to see anv useful purpose in such a statement Remember this book is meant for nine, ten and eleven year olds If the statement is meant to be funny, it seems to be a sick kind of humor to be teaching children One more point in the book we question Since the whole booklet deals with educating consumers to the many wavs in which water is wasted, points out the many needs for water, and makes clear the need for wise water consumption it seems logical that education should win in the end However that isn t the method employed by the hero, Captain Hvdio Oh No' He strikes his opponent with a mop, sending him crashing across the stage on page 26, then attacks with fists flying m a no holds barred slugging match on page 32 Victory doesn t come to Captain Hydro because of his superior knowledge, patience m teaching others, or through any other accepted educational process He wins because hr has the biggest muscles, pounds his opponent to a pulp and ships him off in an ambulance We lepeat water conserv ation is a timely and appiopnate subject to be teaching in our schools We have no objections to the comic book format used We do believe student materials used in teaching any subject, however, should nev ei stoop to demeaning any race, religion or sex Tasteless jokes have no place in elementary school curriculum With the FT v igorously opposing the amount of lolence duldi en are subjected to in TV viewing we feel showing violence in the same childrens textbooks, as the hero's method of solving a problem, is an affront Captain Hydro could stand a little cleaning up Debate Meet Draws KHS Bingham High Invitational debate meet was held April 16. and Kearns Cougars had two teams do extremely well Ted Thatcher and Tony Miera took home a first place, and the team of Marvin Hubbard and Mark Whittaker received a second, competing against debaters from 13 schools Six students participated at a tournament April 21, 22, and 23 at the L'mversity of e m California All did well, although none broke Pep-perdin- through in their rounds Competing against students from 55 schools w ere teams of Mark Whittaker with Ted Thatcher and Alvin Miles with Marvin Hubbard ieki Montoya and Ken Warner did their work in impromptu |
