Details on application dates the date of the public and drawing will be published in the Big Game Proclamation which will be available about by Rhoda Werner Lets meet Wlllamettas Fraldy Cat from Shady Acre, Roanoke, Virginia. The person who originated the term fraidy cat must have had a cat Just like ours. Before Josephine entered our lives, if I had thought about it I would have wondered how anyone ever thought up such an expression. My experience has been that cats are superbly unafraid of anything, yet Jose is so afraid of even little things like birds that Martin calls her Krazy Kat. We got Josie from the Animal Shelter early in January 1964, as a big eyed, trembling beauty. Her fur was so thick that we thought she was perhaps a year old; but when we put her in our cat cage In the car she surprised us by slipping through the bars, so we realized we had gotten less cat than we had thought. She seemed unafraid of passing traffic and made up with mother and me on the way home, and accepted Daddy without question, so it was not tillMartin came home from work and the sight of him sent her into flight that we had our first intimation of her timidity, or, more probably, trauma. The veterinarina estimated she had been born late in October, so arbitrarily selected a day - - the 25th - -as her birthday. And whatever happened during the first ten or twelve weeks of her life conditioned her into what the vet called the most emotional cat Ive ever seen. neurotic. Likely he was sparing me by not calling Josie You cant coax her outdoors by day - - unless you go along as protection - - even though she delights in exploring our woods, and she often brings live field mice as morning offerings after a night out. (Having been sprayed she spares us fence-to- p serenades.) All day she keeps watch over he domain from behind the safety of closed windows, but occasionally from the window her sharp eyes discern a motion in the grass which looks interesting and she demands exit. I always stand at the door, however, as I know what will happen even if her cautious survey at the threshold has reassured her. We feed the birds the year around, so there is seldom a moment when the yard is clear of them. Thus, when she stsps out she will suddenly see a feeding ground dove, or a blue jay will raucously berate her, and as if her legs had suddenly became jelly she will sink to the ground, and at my invitation will slink back into the house. Actually, the blue jay, rather than berating her, was the peanut? for probably yelling at me, Hey, wheres none of our birds seem unduly alarmed at sight of her, although I find it hard to believe that. When she goes out at dusk, and there is a distrubance among the birds, I invariably rush out hinking that this time she surely must have flushed one of their babies, but she is never involved. She always appears from under the car or out of the garage or chicken house in a silent expectation of a chaperoned stroll in the woods. Few visitors have caught sight of Josie - - she flees at their approach. In the course of time she learned that Martin was harmless, and has even gone so far as to get on his lap occasionally. Mother and Dad were acceptable as s, thus Martin and I were enabled to take a Western trip in 1964. But, during my long absence in July, 1965 after Daddys death, she must finally have decided I had gone forever; she all but gave up eating and was so thin by the time I got home that I was concerned for her. For two days she refused to let me out of her sight, and she slept with a paw on my shoulder. With the inconsistency of cats, there once was a stranger who completely fascinated her. While Mothers addition was being built, a young electrician did some extra work for me. When I found Josie on the basement stairs where he was working I thought I was rescuing her when I carried her upstairs, but a few minutes later she had returned. Then in the living room as he replaced an outlet, she perched on a hassock at his elvow, watching. He reached up to pet her and tho she flinched, she permitted it. And from her that was a passionate response. I cant figure why he looked any different to her from all other visitors and workmen whose approach sends her into seclusion. There have been two other excepin ajays Sheldon Wesson tions and Victor Moiteret. In both cases she retreated just as far as the library and peered out at them and had they remainded longer she might have come out. All three of these were big men. Maybe but who understands cats? She may in time become as brave as in Dorothys Ode, and stop running when chipmunks and squirrels chase her. For who understands any cat? Gardez Bien!
