Why Shakespeare left Stratford, why and when he went to London Is not really known, although there is unverlfiable tales of drinking bouts and poaching offenses. His prestige and genius grew. During his later years he bought a home (New Place) and other property in his home town Stratford, apparently spending much time there and retiring from the theater. Almost all his work was done between 1591 and 1613. Much can be said of his quartos and folios, sonnets and A 1583. resentative.
