This is having and will have for some time to come a serious effect on each citizen and taxpayer in our State. What disturbs me most is that I as a taxpayer will be penalized like the rest of the 'business people of the State to pay the extra taxes that must be had to carry on the normal and necessary activities of our 'State. There have been millions of words written about how business is at fault for all of the labor problems and equally as many words written that labor is at fault for all of the business peoples problems. It is my belief that the real stupidity lays: with the public in general. Why have we not long ago made up our minds and demanded that something be done about long, drawn-ou- t and unnecessary strikes that so severely affect the rich, the poor, old and young, married and single, Republicans and Democrats? Sooner or later we will have to set up some control over long, drawnout strikes. It puts the majority of the workers in the industries such as Kennecott, the steel companies, etc. in serious financial jeopardy. The companies involved cannot pay divi-deto their stockholders, and in many instances these stockholders are the elders who have invested their funds and count on these dividends to provide the income for their livelihood. The devastating loss of revenue retards our school programs for new buildings, better salaries and conditions for our teachers; d gies us less miles of hunand retards roads dreds of other public services But we must be most cautious as a public not to take sides the iand plan penalties for' either but the or unions, companies take the middle road. While approaching corrective measures, why should the public pay the bill for strikes that we the public have no control over either the making or the settlement of the strike? Why should it not be that all parties involved in the strike be required to con tinue to pay the same tax based on their last 3 months earnings (the individuals, company and union alike) during the strike period. 1 sincerely feel that this would help to eliminate the complacency of the union members. 'He would be much more interested in attending his meetings, assisting his officials in the union and really know what goes on around him and not just be subservient The unions have been forced to operate with a few loyal members that had in-- i terest enough to attend meetings and endeavor to make their lot better while the general mem-- ; bership has stayed home. This tax issue would surely make The t I ns . the company more interested in not waiting until the last day of the contract before really getting down to the earnest and honest negotiations for a new contract. The unions would feel the pinch of having to pay out of their funds some of the costs of the lost revenue to the pub-- : lie. If something isnt done in the near future, there will continue to be more Hoffas and his kind that makes the public in general both fear and distrust the union. So one day we all lose because the American con-- i gress will bring about labor and business controls that will wipe out so much of the benefits worked so hard for over so many; years. We can but hope that calm, thinking men and women from every walk of life will take some real interest that bitterness, punishment or penalty for anyone will have no consideration but the common benefit and security of all be preserved. A SCHOOL CHILD'S HEART Healthy children are happy children. Happy parents are those with healthy children. School days are drawing near, and it is time for the physical checkup for all children by the family doctor. Healthy children are attentive students.
