Jaycees are annual convention attenders and have found the trend in progressive cities to locate their convention centers away, from, their crowded business districts. Where all, or nearly all, of the convention business, easing facilities, and entertainment can be conducted under one roof, Jaycees have found the conventions to be more outstanding and enjoyable. It is believed that a large enough convention center, with adequate parking, cannot be built in downtown Salt Lake City. Mr. G. Morris Rowley, principal, addressed the group and explained the American Values Project which was begun in the school last year and will be broadened fO Jtike in the entire school this year. He explained that the school is rather a typical community in many ways, and students can practice' the principles of democratic living and learn from experience. The two primary objectives of the program in American Values are, (1) To help students develop a working understanding of democratic principles. (2) To provide an environment in the school community in which these principles may be applied and practiced. Last year the program underwent a research phase, this year it will be a pilot study and next year it will be evaluated. Kearns Jr. High is the only school fn the Granite District which is carrying out this program at the present time, under the guidance of personnel, from, the State Department, of Public Instruction and the Granite School District. The program is expected to help students become positive elements in society, to develop their capacity to think, and help make individuals out of them, among other things. The studentbody officers will make up the executive branch for the school, with members of the 7th and 8th grades ' making up the House, and the 9th grade the Senate. The school government will meet as a legislative group. and The group then summarized the ideas they brought out in the panel discussions. -- |
