We have been studying about out flag. We have learned that the first flag was probably made by Betsy Ross in 1777. The first flag had 13 stripes as our flag has now. It also had 13 stars arranged in a circle. Each star represented one of the 13 states at that time. Later, stars were added as new states were formed. Since this class started school, two new states have been added. The class knows that the two newest stars are for Alaska and Hawaii. We learned that the red in the lag stands for courage, the white Lined Slim Jims 88 for purity and innocence and the blue for perserverence and justice. This class is learning to have re- spect for the flag. Every morning when school begins we stand and salute the flag and pledge our allegiance. Every student in the room has worked on the flag, constructing it from paper chains and stars which we made in class. Our picture shows the original placement of the stars but we will change them upon completion of the flag to show our present day flag.
