Show Thursday, January 5, 1961 THE VALLEY VIEW NEWS Page 2 Dear Mr. Editor. Some of the people in Kearns have discussed the sidewalk estimated assessments and have even have quoted estimates from private contractors, which were much lower than the estimates published in The Valley View News. Now we feel that since we have to pay for the installation of the sidewlaks, we .should get the job done for actual costs of labor and concrete. Technically we dont own the sidewalks even after we pay for them, but they Will tend to increase the value of our property for tax purposes which eventually we will be taxed more on our property after they are put in Some of us feel that unless our assessments for the sidewalks are figured at a considerable lower figure, wed ratther hire the County to survey and put the stakes in and let us hire the sidewalks put in by private contractors so it will be less expensive to us. Could you give us some kind of alternative that we could follow in regards to the installation of the sidewalks. Yours truly, Linden Smith OPEN LETTER TO SALT LAKE COUNTY IMPROVEMENT DISTRICT No. 3, Kearns, Utah, Gentlemen: We the undersigned, home owners of Kearns, would like to protest not against the proposed sidewalks, but the way it is proposed. We originally bought homes in Kearns because of the low cost housing program. We figured we could not affprd better accommodations. However since our arrival three years or more all taxes and all utilities here have been at a steady incline. With the cost of landscaping our property (and the water bills are outrageous) and the increased property taxes that follows few of -- hap-haza- rd , us have surplus money, or no money at all. (1) Sidewlaks will necessitate relandscaping of all front yards. This cannot be done for nothing. (2) Sidewalks will increase the value of our property and likewise increase our property taxes which are so high now that they are difficult to pay. . (3) The price of the sidewalks themselves seems outrageously high for a community project. However you said it could be payed off in a ten year period. Well this would then make us be paying around 500 or more with all interest and hidden charges. (4) Most people do not like to go in debt for such things., (5) The biggest issue here and not very recommendable to all leaders in this project is the voting. January 23rd (a Monday) at 10:30 Just about anyone that is employed works at this hour, and to have the voting in 'Salt Lake City, when you know that most men take the cars and that leaves the women without transportation into Salt Lake City and also they cannot get baby sitters because of A.M. school. So a few select few perhaps can make it to vote so these few get their wishes, Yippie. Let us have sidewlaks for our JOSEPH L.
