Huggins, education. Democratic Candidate for Governor, said to a group of party workers in Heber City, Saturday. Our young people today need more facilities than are available in Utah for education. The youth today are the leaders tomorrow and must be adequately prepared to lead our country, states, cities, and counties. Good schools are so basic to our existence as a Democracy that we must all bend our efforts to maintaining the best educational system possible. And salaries of teachers should be commensurate with ability, training and understanding of the problems involved. The Mr. Huggins continued, an a direct of area has economy bearing on the school system. A growth of industry makes more schools a necessity, but balances the scales by providing more funds with which to run them by broadening the tax base, more property on the tax rolls, more wage' earn less people relief. As a prime example, in San Juan County in 1955, the total assessed valuation of the whole country was six million dollars. During this year, money was being heavily drawn from the uniform school fund. In 1959, however, with the advent of oil in San Juan County, the assessed valuation went up to ninety four million dollars, an increase of 1500 per cent, and during this year, instead of drawing from the uniform school fund, the sum of $660,000 was put into it. But good schools do not just happen. They have to be Created by men and women working in their communities who are cognizant of trends in industry and education and lay effective plans in advance for the future. Your governor must keep these things in mind, and at the same time encourage and develop new industry, and make plans to deal with an exploding population and the its related school problems, candidate concluded. man, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. John D. Council of Women Members Visit International Peace Gardens In unity there is strength and when this is spurred with a purpose achievement is the reward. This was especially emphasized at Jordan Park Peace Gardens when new delegates to the Salt Lake Council of Women attended the annual membership tea in the gardens last week and enjoyed some of the editions for which the council is responsible. First they found the entrance to the park marked with an ar.tt active gateway sign Jordan Park, with a smaller sign hanging just beneath it say International Peace Gardens. Farther into the park j. the beautiful stone gateway and arch leading into the garden itself. Bronze plaques on the gateway, gift of the council, tell the story of the organization, hopes and dreams for this lovely park located on South Eighth West and one of Salt Lakes finest. The new delegates signed in at the stone registry and also sat upon the nine marble benches located throughout the gardens, again council gifts. It is with pride the council welcomes its new delegates from the eighty member clubs to its membership tea held annually in the Peace Number 39 ihU faoBDtt ers, LOCAL Boating Group . Servicemen News Addressed by QUONSET POINT, R I. John D. William Barlocker Coon, Jr., electricians mate fire- SALT LAKE CITY William A. (Bill) Barlocker, Democratic candidate for Governor conferred with a group of interested sportsmen boaters in his office this week. In the discussion the fact was brought out and Mr. Barlocker agreed that there should be some changes in the present, inconsistent boating law in the state which in turn is hindering the tourist business. With proper legislation, many of the problems which are now prevailing can be rectified. Mr. Barlocker concluded by sayto be realistic, a member ing, from this advisory committee should also be a member of the Park and Recreation Commission. The Fastest Growing Community In Utah Gardens. Each year the council sets aside money to be used for some item ro beautify the gardens. Some times the amounts is allowed to accumulate for several years that they may purchase a desired item of greater cost. All of this is done in ful. cooperation with the Salt Lake City Parks Department. Mrs. Otto A. Wiesley is permanent chairman of the Peace Gardens and the Past Presidents Organization of the Council has the gardens as it's project. Last Mondays tea was under the direction of Mrs. N. L. Herrick, immediate past president. Officers and especially invited guests formed a receiving line headed by Mrs. Herrick and Mrs. Russell E. Bjorkland, president.
