Show Thursday, March 3, 1900 THE VALLEY VIEW NEWS Page 2 ANYTHING GOES left. I really dont understand why the farmers should get special consideration from the government. If they raise too many beets and cant sell them, as far as Im concerned thats their tough luck. If the government were going to be fair about from this, shouldnt they buy all the surplus yo-ya yo-y-o manufacturing company if they produce too many? If the farmer brings his eggs to market and he doesnt get what he thinks theyre worth, why should the government make up the difference? Ive never heard of Uncle Sam helping out a used car dealer if hes caught in the same perdicament. Ive got nothing against the farmer but it seems to me that the law of supply and demand and all other laws of economics seem to work allright for all other phases of business, so why shouldnt the same rules apply to the farming industry? If the newspapers wanted to raise a real furor, let them print the facts on how much wheat, butter, and eggs are stored in the government warehouses. But this is all leading to a very interesting, if not humorous incident, that happened in Idaho a few years back. As you know Idaho is the potato os . Every all their surplus potatoes at 90 farmer in Idaho naturally raised all the potatoes he could, knowing Uncle Sam would buy the whole load. What they couldnt sell, they shipped to Washington or to a designated warehouse. Back came a nice check from the government. But now Uncle Sam was stuck with a couple of million tons of potatoes. Someone came up with the smart idea of selling them back to the farmers of Idaho at half price so they could use them for whatever they use old potatoes for. But the people of Idaho werent buying. They in turn came up with the suggestion that they would take them off the governments hand at no charge, provided of course that the government would pay the shipping charges. This was done and lo and behold the farmers of Idaho had their potatoes back and kept the check. But the story isnt over yet. The farmers turned around and shipped the potatoes back to the government as surplus and received another check for the same load of potatoes. The government, being none the wiser shipped them back to the farmers at no charge. So now, the farmers had two checks for the potatoes and whats more, they still had the potatoes. 'After a few transcontinental trips for the potatoes, someone in Washington got wise to the whole fiasco. But they had an answer. From then on, the farmers sent all their surplus potatoes to Washington and received their check. The government then dyed all the potatoes blue and shipped them back to the farmers at no charge. After all, how long can you keep a good thing going? And there, friends, is where part of your income tax is going. Pleasant thought isnt it? DR. T. CHLEPAS, Optometrist Sunday School Worship Service B. MILLER, HARRY sometime since Ive read in the newspapers about government parities and farm surpluses. The reason probably is, that the newspapers are so full of payola, murder trials, the pros and cons of capital punishment. and so forth that there isnt room in the papers for the stories on government subsidies. I imagine tho that the government is still subsidising farmers, buying their surpluses, and paying them huge amounts for not growing anything. These agreements between the farmers and the government may have some justification. The only objection that I have is that theyre using my money to buy the farmers vote. Sure, theyre using your money too but Im not worrying about that. If you dont like it, write to your congressman. This is the way I voice my objection to this practice. 4511 West 5540 South Kay state. The people of Idaho themselves consume huge amounts of potatoes, and what they dont use they entered as 2nd Class matter at the Post Office at Salt Lake City, Utah sell.
