Show Thursday, November 5, 1959 THE VALLEY VIEW NEWS Page 2 Valleij Viet ANYTHING GOES d, luij w. A while ago the news broke that the popular T. V. Quiz shows of a few years ago were fixed. It seem that the contestants were given the answers to the questions beforehand and the the whole thing smelled a little like a compost pile in the back yard. This made interesting reading for a few days but I dont understand why its being dragged out for so long and why its coming under the scrutiny of Congressional investigations. After all, the only thing that happened was that smart boys made a sucker out of you and I again. This was not the first time this has happened and I assure you that it wont be the last. The American public as a whole are a gullible lot The hucksters tell us what they want and we are as impressed as the country yokel who gets taken with the old shell game as the country fair by the city slicker. ' Evidentally we enjoy being made to look like a fool because we keep coming back for more. Youd think that we learn by experience, but I dont think we do. If anything should come under investigation it should be the commercials on T.V., not the programs themselves. Im talking of the advertisements that at best insult the intelligence of an eighth grader. Do you actually believe the commercial where the admen pour a beaker of stomach acid on a hankerchief and the acid eats a hole in it? Or when they use a microscope to show you how one dentrifice kills all the bacteria in your mouth where the other tooth pastes fail to do the job? Or when they tell you that one type of gasoline will send your car into orbit and if you use any other gasoline youre lucky if your car even starts? Do you really want to know why people keep buying a certain brand of gasoline? Its because they have found out that the gas station that sells X brand of gasoline has the cleanest rest rooms and besides, that they give green stamps. After all how far can you deviate from the norm when it comes to gasoline, soap dentrifices or headache powders. The ingredients are basically the same and one does as good, or as bad, a job as the other. The reason you buy one item rather than the other is because of the way its packaged, or priced, or because its placed in the handiest spot on the shelf. I think there is some loyalty to brand names but the reason you buy them are far removed from the lies they tell you about them on T.V. or radio. But getting back to the fixed T.V. Quiz shows. We can all yell shame and terrible because we werent involved. But lets suppose that you were approached by these programs and given the opportunity to win a few hundred thousand bucks by answering questions to which you were supplied the answers? Would you turn it down? I doubt it. After all you can always rationalize and say that youre entertaining people and you should get paid for it. Getting the answers, you might say to your- KkuA B. And the American T.V. viewers acting their part of gullible sheep rushed to the corner grocery store in droves to buy the products they were told to buy by the nice talking gentlemen on the television set. Everyone acted out their part perfectly and the only people that were hurt were the ones that spent their hard earned money on items they didnt really need and didnt measure up to what the announcer said. Of course the fact that they made a fool of you didnt help a bit. This comes under the general classification of adding insult to injury. It seems to me that our Congress has more important things to do than spend their time and our money in investigating T. V. programs.
