Show Thursday, July 16, 1959 THE VALLEY VIEW NEWS Page 3 Western Boys' Baseball Umps Are Highest Paid Officials by Jessie Olsen Not in terms of hard, cold cash, but in terms of hard, cold name, and peers from the audiences, the Little League umpires are the highest paid oficals in boys baseball. Little League umpires have been hard to keep this year. The Kearns National NBBA started out with nine umpires, and now have only three. Aver excited parents and other ooters rewarding them for their time effort with scorn, should stop and think before they holler. A general razz of umpires makes for a colorful ball game, but the name calling is costing WMMA organizations many of its most dedicated workers. Anyone who thinks the job of an umpire is an easy one is invited to have a try at it. A League rule makes it possible for an umpire to eject a heckler from the scene if they become a disturbing influence. A more drastic measure alows the umpire to call the game if the heckling' continues. It is hoped that this action will never have to be taken. Rooters should take a lesson from the young players in sportsmanship, and remember that the umpires are on top of the game at all times and can see things that the onlookers may overlook. Lets give them a cheer instead of a jeer at the next ball game. cat-cal- Valley Discount Team (Braves, majors) is managed by Keith Martin. ls In the game of life the most difficult feat is to play ball with your acounts and yet not to be caught stealing. With the rapid passing of summer, the baseball season will soon be nearing an end. All star team will be sson be chosen, and prepwill aration for regional play-off- s be keeping the managers and directors on their toes. The small baseball leagues of the area have given the boys something to do with their time during the summer months. If it had The Minor League Red-Leg- s not been for this type of recreation, many boys would have been completely idle through the summer months of school vacation. Dont forget to attend the ball games and back the boys to the hilt. HELPFUL HINTS Planting Seeds Take the halves of empty egg shells and fill with soil, then put back into the egg carton. Plant d seeds in the shells, to be planted outside later in the season. Place each eeg into the groud with the plant. The shell will help to fertilize the soil. Shorten Ironing Time Iron smaller items over larger ones to do two jobs at the same time; such as handkerchiefs over the back of a shirt. Fresh Up Leave closet doors and dresser drawers open occasionally to keep moisture from gathering and to stir up air already inside. Clean Up Take a jar of soapsuds and another jar of clean water along on a picnic. Then you can wash your hands and the children before and after eating. Scratch Remover Use a cut walnut meat to darken a scratch on dark wood. Hammer Head Cover the head of a hammer with a band-ai- d when driving decorative or fragile nail heads. Try Oranges When you make pastry for pies or tarts with summer fresh fruits, substitute orange juice for the required amount of water, and then add grated orange rind. Too Rough Shaking small rugs to rid them of dust is likely to break the karns in the backing. Eespecially rough on the yarn is shaking vigorously enough to make a snapping noise.
