Show Page 3 THE VALLEY VIEW NEWS Thursday, July 2, 1959 ANYTHING GOES Practically every town has a Chamber of Com merce. The main function of this group is to promate the town and make it prosperous. And, of course, they want to put it on the map and make their town well known. Chamber of Commerce in Logan have started a novel idea to acquaint tourists with tire scenic attractions of their town. About once a week the local police department stations one of their cars on the outskirts of town. When theyi spot an obvious tourist or group of tourists, chey pull them over to the curb. Without much explanation, they are herded back to the police department and brought before the local judge. You can well imagine that at this point the tourists are very perturbed about the whole thing. The judge, in his best judicial manner, finds the tourists guilty. of leaving town. He then sentences them to spend twenty four hours in Logan. The only catch is that the Chamber of Commerce foots the bill for the whole thing. The tourists are treated to three meals at the best restaurants in Lcgan. They are guests at one of the leading hotels or motels with the Chamber picking up the tab. They are taken for an extended trip to the canyons, college, and other points of interest. When their twenty four hour term, has been paid, they are escorted out of town and bid a fond adieu. You can bet that these tourists have a wonderful time and itll be a long time before they forget the town of Logan, Utah. The Someone once said that the only things that were absolutely certain in this life were death and Taxes. Unfortunately they dont come in thatrder. On July 1st the State of Utah, after deciding that we didnt pay enough taxes already, is going to give you a good opportunity to pay some more. The most vicious of these new taxes is not the By Rolf W Kay tax itself, but the method of collecting it. Im deduction for state ferring to the new pay-roll rein- come tax. I always objected to the withholding tax as being basically a underhanded way io. collect taxes. makes $100.00 a week. Lets say that before he sees For the sake of argument, lets say an individual makes $100.00 a week. Let's say that before he sees his paycheck Uncle Sam Slices $25 from it as his donation to the coffers of the U.S. Treasury Department. He then figures to himself that instead of making $100 a week, he actually makes $75. Afrer all, take home pay is .what he feeds the kids on. So his deduction is painless and everyone is relatively happy. Uncle Sam gets his slice and our happy worker makes ends meet on whats left. But lets suppose that instead of taking the tax out of the pay check before he sees it, they let him pay it every month along wth his other bills. Youll soon see some mighty irate citizens complain of high taxes when they have to send a check every month to the Tax Collector. Theyll soon realize chat they can buy a new T.V. set for $9.00 a month, or a refrigerator for $12.00 a month. But every month they have to dole out about three times that much for taxes so that dear old Uncle Sam can throw most of it away. And now theyre going to take another healthy slice out of our paychecks. And frankly I dont remember them asking us if they could do it. And how easy it is to raise taxes when its on a payroll deduction. Whos going to complain about it? After all we never see it in the first place and you dont miss what youve never had. No one will argue that some taxation is not necessary. But when the government keeps insisting on more and more money like a greedy little child only to waste most of it then some one should do a lot of objecting.
