If rock and roll music was confined to only instrumentals without words it would be bad enough. But the tragic and revolting aspect is in the words. Read the titles of these songs and, if you have patience, listen to the words. As a whole they imply that anyone over the age of ten who is not married or at least going steady, is a social outcast. Is it any wonder that kids fourteen and fifteen are getting married? Perhaps once or twice a year you get a chance to try to talk some sense to jtour children regarding the facts of life. How can these few minutes make an impression on their minds when for eight or more hours a day they hear nothing but the suggestive songs on their radio stations. There are in this area, two or three radio stations that play nothing but the aforementioned trashy music. These radio stations are run by the people who do not fulfill their obligation to society that the F.C.C. is talking about. Personally I cannot understand why any advertisers buy time on their stations. I have no desire to go on a one man campaign to elevate the standard of music. However, there is one way to abolish it from the airwaves, and that is for everyone who objects to it to write to the radio stations and voice their opinion. Public opinion is still a tremendous factor that carries a lot of weight, and the radio station owners as well as publishers are cognizant of that fact. If enough people, individually, or through the combined offerots of civil and church groups raise enough objections a change for the better is bound to take place. into the rock and roll music played on the radio stations of America. Somene in that fine organization has finally decided that perhaps this type of music, if it can be called music, is doing some harm to the listeners. They have also come forth with the premise that the radio stations of America have an obligation to the people that listen to their programs and society as a whole. This premise I agree with wholeheartily. I am well aware of the fact that every generation of adults thinks that the up and coming generation of kids are going to the dogs. They are convinced that their manners, attitudes, dress and general outlook on life has hit a new low that was never possible when they were kids. I dont agree with this thinking at all. By the same token I do not think that anyone in their right mind could conceivably say that the popular music of today is anything but downright trash. And the worst kind of trash at that. You can be sure that anyone who says that rock and roll music has any value whatsoever is making money from it and theyd be foolish not to praise it to the skys. The unfortunate thing about the whole matter is that it takes an absolute minimum of talent to write this kind of music and it takes less than that to be on the performing end. And why is there so much money in rock and roll music? Because it appeals to the teenager and the teenagers as a group have more money to throw away than any other age group. While the parents are busy saving their nickels and dimes for some bulwark of prosperity Copper Copper is one of Utah's most important basic industries. In 1957 copper provided apayroll of more than $40,000,000 for about 7500 Utahns, while thousands of additional jobs existed in our state to meet the needs of copper producers and their employees. And copper is an important source of tax revenue the industry's assessed property valuation is 20 of Utah's total.
