Reporters and photographers spent the day with the members of the Jr. clubs acquiring pictures of them and information about them. The Jr. Gardeners were first organized under the direction of Mrs. Thurlyn Christensen in the spring of 1959. For a strating place, Mr. Ray Gigoux presented the group with a liberal financial donation whcih in turn was matched by the Senior Garden Club. The principals of the local schools were contacted for their approval of having a Jr. Club in each school. Then the approval had to be obtained from the school board to carry out the activities. It took many weeks in the planning and in securing the needed OKs to go ahead with the project. Ray's Barber Shop North East Corner of Kearns Catering to Men, Women and Children Closed Mondays - Except Week Containing a Holiday Granger News Plastic Bag Dangers The various schools gave their consent for the groups to hold their meetings in rooms during the fall and winter months. During the summer, meetings are held out of doors and at some homes. Two schools remain to be enrolled in the Garden Club. The Kearns Jr. High and the David Gourley will have students to participate in the fall when school starts again. 300 students are at present registered. Membership dues of 50 cents per student per year has furnished the funds for the planting of flowers around the various local schools. The children are learning how to prepare and plant, to identify plans, and the proper care to give plants. In September, they will hold a junior flower show to exhibit the things they have learned. The Jr. Garden Clubs also are planning to be represented in the Founders Day Parade. Many women who are not Senior Garden Club members are assisting those who are in the teaching and instruction of these children. With all of these efforts, how could our community help but to live up to the Clubs motto, Make Kearns The City Beautiful? The number of deaths of infants caused by the misuse of plastic or bags as playthings, pillow-slip- s mattress covers has risen to at least thirty in the nation, medical authorities now report. As a result, the Utah State Medical Association this week joined in urging parents to take preventative measures against dangerous use of the outwardly harmless bags by small children. Dr. U. R. Bryner, president of the Utah State Medical Association, explained that small children, putting the bags over their heads in innocent play, run extreme danger of suffocation. In other cases, parents have mistakenly used the readily or available bags as pillow-case- s mattress-cover- s and static electricity, making the plastic adhere to the youngsters mouth and nostrils, adds to the great danger of suffocation. As a result, the American Medical Association, which first warned of the suffocation danger and alerted parents, police and health officials, has joined with the National Safety Council, U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Public Health Association and the Society of the Plastics Industry, Inc., to educate the public against the misuse of the bags. With additional produce, clothing, bakery goods, hardware and similar items being packaged in the plastic, more and more children across the nation are being exposed to the materials. As a result, only a campaign of education of both parents and teachers will be effective in lessening the danger, the Medical Association believes.
