Show from our western correspondent PINE PIKE VALLEY aug 5 1859 1839 EDITOR NE NEWS Vs DEAR DEAB SIR the stage bringing the mail and B bl holliday and if egan arrived here this afternoon and wili will unless some unforeseen accident occurs reach gravelly ford on the humboldt tonight to night making the run from salt lake city to the former place in less than fifty eight hours the fastest time if I 1 mistake not ever made in this mountainous country with coaches your paper I 1 am aware is not the proper medium through which to advance private interests te or to defend individual character but as this mail is a thing the public are interested in anti and particularly our public you will perhaps permit me to reply in few words to bome some false assertions and un unest i list insinuations contained in a place placerville erville iville paper which I 1 happened to see the editor who has evidently never been over the road in ellb slightly ty disguised terms attacks mr egan our able superintendent pronounces him unfit for the position he occupies complains of occupying the schedule time 16 days to make the trip from S L to california instead of making it in eight or nine as can be done lauds mr crandall the subagent on that end to the ski essays his arjang k men ments to are aye much better and more efficient than mr egans egana an s an and finally ally aily as much as bays says he hopes tha that t aa maior major I 1 lor jor C chorpenning br penning will make mr C our superintendent u in place of 0 the present incumbent with regard to the arrangements we leave th the traveling public to tu decide between the relative a t ve merits of the two divisions of the route As to speedie speed we we are prepared to make better time than they ever have done on that end when there exists any necessity for it but at present it must be more pleasant for gers gera to get their regular rest than that to be rushed I 1 through without sleep or an opportunity to stretch their limbs but aside from this major or 0 would get no extra pay for increased speed peed besides running the risk of 0 breaking coaches 0 c e 9 overturning passenger passengers sp etc inthe in the dicht last winter when it was necessary to make as quick time ae as possible they were nearly always behind time on that end of the route and our mail carriers bad to make it up th they e had bad too little or no snow on the I 1 af humboldt t while we hadbo had bad to carryll carry it for many miles through snow from one to three feet deep facts speak for themselves to those acquainted quain ted with them but I 1 would just say that we are prepared to institute a comparison or to compete com pete with that end of the route in any way shape or trl tri anner manner they may nay please and I 1 do not believe major C could find a more eul able man for superintendent than mr egan H |
