first of this month the prospects of the farmer in this county were not very flattering arid and there were but little hopes of an average crop of wheat or other grain this season but the late rains have revived the hopes of the agriculturist as the crops especially the wheat though late are now looking very well and if the season continues favorable an abundant harvest anay ay yet be realized on the ath dinst I 1 set out to visit the different f settlements settle settie ments meats in the county and on arriving at ephraim met with elders geo A smith arid and amasa lyman who accepted of an invitation to accompany me we staid at ephraim that night and the next morning sunday started for mount blount pleasant where we arrived at noon and spent the after part of the day in preaching to te tue people and at their thein request organized a branch of the church william S seeley was ordained bishop mount blount pleasant ia is a flourishing place of about inhabitants the settlement was commenced this last spring the tha people ar are e very industrious bits and enterprising they have some 1200 acres in cultivation with a fair prospect of a good croil crop on the ad dinst they laid the foundation of a fort wall 25 26 rods square built of stone four feet thick at the bottom two at the top and thirteen feet high which I 1 under understand standi was wag finished hird fird shed y yesterday eit erday A grist mill and a saw mill are in progress of erection and from the advantages of timber and other materials for building and fencing I 1 fancy that a beautiful city will be built in a few years on the elevated site of mount blount pleas a an nt we e left on our return to ephraim on the tha morn 1 irig ing of the lith viewing by the ho way several good locations for settlements where good boil soil timber limber and water are arc abundant the grain fields at ephraim are very extensive and the prospect is that there will be a heavy harvest anti anil when it commences which will be about the first of august many can find employment there soon after our arrival at ephraim it was announced pounced that the people had gathered for inz and elders smith and lyman preached to the congregation in their usual powerful way after which caleb G gi edwards was unanimously ou stained sustained and ordained bishop of ephraim branch this place contains nearly 1000 inhabitants and if the spirit of the age had been fully displayed at the commencement of the settlement it liht have been before chis timea timba beautiful wever everidis it is now improving very fast anday straightening the streets and arranging things properly Y it will soon assume a biffle ent appearance A new saw mill has been built couill and put in operation at tah this place this season and the foundation of a meetinghouse meeting hoase house 40 by 60 feet has las been laid which they design to finish before winter the advantages for grazing are good and th the meadows are the best that I 1 have seen in the territory orv we left for mantl manti at p m and arrived at 7 in the evening manti is a beautiful location and surrounded by many advantages not equaled timber in the territory in respect to soil soll water limbers limber stone istone and aud other materials and numbers about 1203 inhabitants the fore part of the day was spent in viewing the different improvements bridges dwellings machinery ac which indicate the industry y and enterprise of the people at 1 pm the people assembled for tor public were addressed by elders smith and lyman setting forth the true principles of the gospel as contained in the scriptures of divine truth wednesday we bet ret off for moroni visiting the coal mines by the wayt we found the iha men at work there them very busy in digging coal burning lime ac we were informed by the colliers that the vein of coal had been discovered in the kali kan yens both north and south of the place where they are now at rit work they have worked into the bank about yards abe coal is of a superior quality and arid gets gett better as they penetrate furt further ler ier into the hill we arrived at at 4 p m and were enn entertained pertained by cr br was ordained president and bishop of th the moroni affron branch this is a newly settled place containing about inhabitants and increasing daily the soil is good the water abundant an and tl the ie location one of the best in the mountains at 2 pm elders smith and lyman left rory oi silt creek and I 1 returned lome lema highly pleased wiett wn the visit the people cener gener generelly feel well in evera e err erv settlement we visited and hey are pleased with the prospects acts that lay before them and the crops look far better belter than I 1 had anticipated at a convention held at manti
