lengthy harangue from the pen sk of its editor editor upon a recent co of mine which ap appeared feared in your paper although fully apprised of the brilliant talent and of his bis indomitable energy courage and military prowess in any cause he be undertakes iwas I 1 was certainly until the present unaware that he aspired to the distinguished position 0 action of being the don quixote of df the letb t century though like Ilke most of our patriotic and justice loving behof men of this age a hp h a advocates d the cadge c of those who best like this champion for truth and justice I 1 had llad no wish to excite controversy but since he has ilas thrown thrown down the gauntlet and d danied denied nied my assertions in matters of which he is or for his credit I 1 hope he is entirely ignorant I 1 cannot do otherwise than take it up before criticising criticizing critic ising his bis remarks allow me as aa an act of justice to say bay that in my former i communication I 1 had no reference whatever whit ever to the present company in my nay observations about promises I 1 had bad always received my pay promptly and ana when I 1 lert left the city little or nothing was due me by the X P co the same may be said of many mahy of the employees employees I 1 wrote a note to mr bellof the firm of L 13 go cip to that effect and expressing my regret at noy nay basil habil hastily y penned remarks baying haying been construed in in a sense they were ivere not intended nor d do 0 I 1 charge upon jones russell I 1 co the blame of our non receipt of chor penning pay had I 1 been in mr russells place I 1 would have done as he has it was not his placebo pl aceto hunt up the chorpenning employees and beg them to accept from him the yay that was due them from mr lir C B by mr nf tay bell beil ell eil I 1 also I 1 have been treated with lilt lait the utmost extent of that courtesy due from ore one gentleman to another but as ab assertions have been made which 1 in no wise wished to touch upon but which are incorrect I 1 shall in self defense be under the necessity of correct correction correcting in i them the legal gent gentlemen lemeh who is the author of the remarks may have been employed as the confidential counselor of the parties he be represents but althou although h unsophisticated in wouly legal matters I 1 would advise him to get a better knowl knowledge edge of and evidence ona oua on a cause before he engages ell eil gages in it again a L maln oain I 1 halve have id lit my possession certificates from several men on this en endom end dof of the line that the a agent ent of the C 0 C ap P P cop co cos has not been along this division of the route from G S L city to roberts creek with funds to make a settlement for upwards of seven months this you will observe is receiving melr meir pay fuli if full ull uli and regularly As to the blame of this let it rest where it belongs T r merely refer to this to show the professional gent lemans utter his subject I 1 lave daye always assured ta th men that their pay from this company was safe and sure and I 1 still believe so it has always promptly met its lis liabilities with the exceptions I 1 referred to and no doubt will continue so to do and soon satisfy all demands I 1 suppose the Moun voun mountaineer Mountain fainer err is to be considered the official organ of mail companies and contractors speculators and influential rich men generally irrespective of the justice of the cause well money is ia quite as acceptable to and as eagerly sought for b by Ys editors as by the ob obscure t c id ie employees of the C as S L M milne maine line who not give up their situation while permitted to retain it but as I 1 am an earnest believer in revelation and the m writer riter was evidently inspire i when he penned that articles article especially his pious and ana touching description of a true patriot and martyr I 1 am m loth to diss dissent dissert eilt from his views may I 1 ask ak the writer how he obtained his information concerning the chorpenning property ertson on the C as S lai LM lal L al M line hah has beever he ever been along the road I 1 have bebenin the mail service between S L city and california nearly ever since major Cs contract commenced and have never seen him out here who is most likely to know about the condition of things and disposition of property on this road men who have lived and traveled oi oil it for years or those who have never seen a mile of it west of forb fort crittenden the author has evidently been instructed what to write by some one besides mr air bell but I 1 made no assertion regarding the chorpenning property but what I 1 can and jf f required will prove and ard a great deal more indre too it is useless for men who have the dis dir disposal osal of a few coins ink luk that for the are sake bake of 0 their patronage I 1 will submit to be laid under the public ban of falsehood for I 1 awill will not I 1 admire the writers tact and mildness in refer re ferrine ferrina to the inconvenience accruing to Chorpenning Chor 3 employees by not receiving pay for service performed for him during one or two years faithful labor and also the ma magnanimity unanimity nani mity of the hint the author anthor and nature of which I 1 well that if dissatisfied we had bad the privilege of quitting the line y yer yei 91 just what is wished by some riar ciar parties E you i have hav worked to help make the road build bild u the stations and get pet everything in order now quit if you want to we would be glad to get rid of you and reap the fruits of your our labors how generous what kind interested disinterested is advice As I 1 have been p personally referred to allow 1 ow me to tell the writer that though I 1 make no pretension to the piety and devotion to the honor and Il glory of his god which he is well known to possess yet my in object in coming on to the road was to obtain rhe the means ilof of securing securing a small home somewhere on 2 hail bail hallowed owed soil and amongst her loved c cherished 1 lia lid ita citizens that I 1 might igat thenceforward devote my tny humble bumble self to a nobler cause than that of carrying the news of our count rys 1 shame and disgrace in one of those lab abundant nu fields of useful usefulness niss to which he refers this is the purpose I 1 still have in view and like many others have havn remained on this line in the almost vain hope of getting the I 1 old debt debts s which as now we nave have deen been a again ain aln and ana again promised should soon boon soon goon be pt paid id us is let that be settled honorably and justly and I 1 will gladly leave the line tomor to mor row but till then and I 1 speak advisedly I 1 badea bittle voice in the disposition of property in which I 1 am interested I 1 trust however no necessity will exist for for my farther reference to this subject WM H
