Play PROTECTION OF HOMECOMING TOPIC Senator Will Return Birthplace Tomorrow In Campaign Broader Base of Taxation For Schools Also To Be Discussed © SALT LAKE CITY 'April 10 — (AP) — The Utah Education association house of delegates will be asked tomorrow to approve a set of resolutions calling for a broader base of taxation for school purposes and enactment of legislation protecting the teacher’s Job E E Greenwood of Midvale PRINTING PROVISION That provision be made for printing all acts and resolutions of the house of delegates since revision of the U E A constitution in 1932 An amendment be adopted fixing the state association dues at $3 at least 50 cents of which would be allocated for research work That the U E A direct its efforts to ohtain progressively increasing stkte equalization fees to reach $10 per pupil That the U E A instruct its legislative committee to frame a bill providing more secure tenure in teaching positions for presentation to the 1937 legislature That the U E A board of trustees authorize research into all pos sible sources of revenue for adequate financing of education in the event present methods are altered That federal aid for education be sought with the right of control reserved for states and districts That all bills submitted to the house of delegates must emanate from the board of trustees state committees or from local associa tions through their officers That representatives of the house of delegates be elected in even years and where possible local associa tktn officers be selected TO APPOINT GROUP That an insurance committee be appointed to further the associa tion’s health and accident insurance program That the U E A support legislative and other changes that would assure a uniform salary schedule with the state department Weekly Parleys j Wash April 10— (AP) Paul Sieg president of the University of Washington described to teachers here an educational experiment in which students profited more from weekly conferences with their instructors — even if they talked about baseball instead of studies — than from regular class lectures Dr Sieg addressed a section or the Inland Empire Education conference In classes selected for the experiment Dr Sieg explained the stu dents were divided into two groups One group attended the daily classroom lectures The other half although following the regular course of study for the class did not attend the lectures The individual students met for short periods each week with the instructor to talk over their studies If a student had no curriculum questions he could talk with the instructor about anything At the end of the term Dr Sieg reported the students who studied on their own initiative without attending classes passed with higher grades than did those in the regular classroom group “After all” the university president summarized "what we are trying to teach is initiative and the ability to learn and this experiment proved that when the average student is
