Show vv last day of the session 50 notwithstanding 0 the alacrity and diligence 0 of the members of both branches of the legislature lature during 0 the winter there was much touch unfinished business on hand on the morning of friday the last day of the session which dimi forthe the general interest of the territory and ome some of their constituents particularly had bad to be completed or be left on the table at the termination termination of the forty days ting lively times we accepted the courteous p privilege ri extended to us by the council and house to a seat within their respective bars alii and was present during the latter part of the day and evening W witnessing the movements tt 1 s spending e n ding most of the time in the house where there was the most speechifying speechify ing and conse bently N q a 14 e antly the most amusement though t the council chamber was not a monotonous place c e in iri the council on calling the roll in the t rv evening ening there was barely a quorum present ta there were one or two came in afterwards filling up vacant seats but we were informed that three or four of the councilors councillors counci lors were sick and nd that all who were able to be present were mere there with one exception in the absence of the president of the council gen wells who has hax been variously sarious ly y indisposed for sometime rhe fhe hon llon L E harrington member from utah was wag presiding and dispatched busl busi business nesa with much precision on ar and kd promptness he showed a atack tact for fo r winding a up not often seen in presiding 0 officers of le legislative 1 bodies there Ther ewas was but one or two tiro of the members of the house absent and although there was evidently a disposition on the part of several to display their orator lal ial powers business was transacted without much delay and bill after bill passed through the regular process of legislative isla tive action landwere and were sent to the council for concurrence bills memorials and resolutions from the upper house received ample attention in quick time and if all the documents met with executive favor the statute books of utah will be more voluminous hereafter the adjournment did not take place till four 0 clock on the morning of the but most of the business was disposed of before ald midnight ni 0 ht the last hour was mccu occupied p led principally 1 y in making short speeches when there was nothing up f for or the consideration of the house the spontaneous efforts of 0 the speakers were humorous and sentimental expressive of their gratification at the courteous treatment they had severally received from each other and from the speaker than choin a more efficient and able officer seldom presided over a deliberative body several if not alithe aalthe speeches were reported by henry A hedger a young man just commencing the business that of mr james the ene energetic and working 0 member from carson ca we insert he has labored manfully for his bis constituents during the session and if jf he has made any enemies among the members of the house we do not cot know who they are mr sir james rose and said mr speaker I 1 tender to you my thanks and to this house for the favors extended to me I 1 have been heretofore somewhat acquainted with legislation but never in my life have I 1 seen such a unanimous spirit exist in a legislative body I 1 came here almost a stranger in fact an entire stranger there is one thing that will ever occupy a S space now ace in in my memory the gratification fi t thal that 1 know I 1 have be been entreated treated kindly generously and courteously and if dunin durin the excitement of debate instigated by too great a zeal I 1 have said anything that has bas conflicted with the views of this honorable body I 1 hope the house and you mr speaker will extend to me the liberality to pass over those little faults which are common to all men I 1 ask this as a favor hoping in fact knowing it will be done heretofore judging rom from rem the liberality which has been heretofore accorded to me as a member of this house and as I 1 have before stated I 1 sincere sincerely thank you for or the kindness BO so liberally extended exten ed tome |
