convention after which they proceeded to the election of a president for which office there ther were v ere four cand candidates izates ex se senator senater na ter tor chestnut fi ex speaker orr governor gist and gen jan jau jannson januson is on each having friends iho sho who advocated advocate d their claims for that distinguished position gen jamison was elected on oil the fifth ballot governor aist list gist withdrew after the third ballot On ont taking aking the chair gen jamison said 1 41 I 1 have not language to express my thanks for the honor conferred upon me roe in making me the ire pre presiding alding officer over the deliberations of this convention convent ign I 1 consider that ahe the convention is ts eng engaged in a most important import apt duty the most important the next day at 4 pm the resolution iso was introduced tn in consequence of the prevalence of the small pox in columbia but N wab was as strongly opposed by some of the most hotheaded hot headed in members ember who declared that they would never consent to leave columbia until toe ordinance of secession was passed as other states would j jeer eer at their timidity if dey ley to charleston in consequence of the small pox or other physical or natural cause in the course of the discussion mr h pi t said be he sas was as ard aid ardently antly devoted to secession as any man and determined to be with the convention until their thelt action was complete cornale te but urged adjourning to Ch charleston aleston he said sald i i e never would consent to hurry through the p pore edings odthe of the convention aag ana gave ave not ace ce that no ordinance should be passed with h 9 consent until every point was duly considered in all its bearings af er a full and fair investigation and discussion ile he said they were engaged in a high and patriotic demanded that the members should be in a I 1 location where their minds could fairly grapple with the important issues involved and not be agitated by a fearful loathsome pestilence when no pressing f necessity required it the motion to adjourn to charleston was finaly carried by a large majority resolutions were adopted inviting 11 the commissioners missioners ners from alabama and mississippi to seats on the the floor and also to address the convention that night at 7 A motion was made to invite lion ilon howell cobb to a eat seat s on the floor some members 1 objected and ana thought a it would be express expressing ill lil b complimentary terms to mr cobb that were not accredited to the commission COMMiSS ion IOD but the motion prevailed with a few dissenting voices on december to adjournment ament J the convention met in charleston at institute hall about one hundred and fifty members were reported present prayer was offered by rev Mr Furlan firlan A resolution was adopted adopt pi hviding for the appointment of a com mitlee of seven beven to prepare an address to the people of the southern states mr hutson offered a reso ution which was ordered tobe to be printed and madeth made the especial special order for the next day at I 1 providing that the standing 9 committees of the convention 1 ven tion each consisting of seven members mem hers should lc lie first on relations with the slaveholding slave siave holdan holding 0 states of north america second 1 on foreign relations third on commercial it was acquired the purposes for which it was acquired can be enjoyed by the united states after the state of south carolina lna shall have seceded consistently with the dignity and safety of the state and that the said committee furthermore report the value of the property of of ahe the abe united states slates not in south carolina and the value of the share thereof to which south carolina would be entitled upon an equitable division thereof among the states 3 great applause from tb the e multitude in tile the galleries followed the introduction and reading of df these resolutions which produced considerable sid erable sensation amon among the members and mr adams said that he should move moye to have the galleries clear edif there was another outburst of the kind the ile resolution was made the special order for f or the next day at i mr detreville submitted a resolution that it is expedient that a committee of five citizens of the state to act with the governor of the state as councilors councillors counci lors and advisers to be called the council of safety be forthwith appointed and that it be referred to a committee of the convention to report thereon by ordina ordinance hice fice or other otherwise vise which was laid over the president then named rhett calhoun finlay wilson wison desausure cheves and arid tracy as the committee to pr prepare c pare an address to the people of the southern state states s the chair stated that he had re received 1 a document after the adjournment of the convent convention ibn yesterday at columbia purporting 0 to bean vean be an
