Show FROM A missionary J eureka co cal cl 1 july 2 all izod 1909 dear editor thinking it would be ot of interest to your readers to knoy know something about the state oi of california arid and also the missionary jk w org d of f the tfx el e tatter L a t ter day sal Sai utan this state I 1 take pleasure in writing you y ou about this state and its industries I 1 am now in eureka a city of about 13 souls situated on the bay about a I 1 mile in land and it is a very pretty little place surrounded on three sides with timbered hills the most ot of the people are engaged in dairying and lumbering humboldt is one of the richest counties of call fornia owing to lumber ant and dairy facilities cili ties the people as a rule are a pretty good class of people although h there are many vices llero here there ire are so I 1 ant alij informed 63 saloons which run all H oid time s in eluded tile the stores also also rila part ot of the lay day during sundays the people hate haie sunday ns as a day of pleasure rather rathel than a day of worship there are many good church members arid and different kinds hinds of religions li but they have lave no use for mormons cormons the ministers have consolidated soli dated in a campaign to fight the four humble mormon elders but since they have been fighting us we have met with much better success where we could not get a chance to talk with people before we are nw now invited ini IIII into their hones homes I 1 I 1 have had bad the privilege of seeing some fine sights since I 1 came here I 1 visited s d a sawmill sonic some das ago which furnished employment to 1000 men and they cut feet of lumber daily and the large vessels are continually loading the lumber there is ona loading now which when completed will have hae feet on board and will then set sall sail for australia I 1 was informed that they lad had logs that would cut feet of lumber I 1 have icen many trees that are 12 feet in diameter and feet in height the other day while out III ia the country I 1 came across a small held field planted with corn and on oil about one and one oile half acres there was 23 of these large dreos treos and the corn wis was growing around them the people to do not believe me when I 1 tell lell thera them that utah has thousands 0 of acres ot of land without having any hills till on oil at all now ns as to the gospel of jesus christ it is true and nil all who will comply with its teachings will know it for themselves ask and ye shall receive knock and it shall be opened unto you sincerely yours JOSEPH D HARRIS |
