Show PROGRESS OF EVENTS AT PROVO the following communication has been unavoidably delayed in its publication PROVO 17 T aug 17 1860 MR AIR EDITOR 1 I am one of those slow going fellows who when brought into contrast with the genus lomo homo of the present day and ex amhed as to the qualifications requisite to make up the fast man might well be dated back a quarter guarter of a century but a change has come oer the spirit of the dream and I 1 find myself longing after aft er immortality so have determined to write you a few of ariy my observations ions and reflections on matters and things in this city the weather has been beeri uncomfortably warm for several weeks past but farmers have been enabled to attend to their usual duties at this season of the year and a large amount of grain bas has been cut the crops are good never were better of wheat there is a good turnout and corn forn is promising the people seem satisfied and as an acquaintance expressed it what there is is all wheat wheaty clean and free from smut and I 1 believe this is generally the case more rain has fallen in utah county this summer than for several years past on wednesday last a storm of rain and hail hall passed over the valley beating down some of the uncut t grain but it will benefit other late field crops sufficiently to make good any damage 0 it may have done Having Haville occasion to ride out a short time ago I 1 was measurably annoyed at the condition t ion ton of the roads perhaps it is wron wrong to find fault but really I 1 do not like to be jolted about so that one feels as it if he had a kapsus kum or some such disease in the r region evon of his stomach nor to have my neck endangered by the sudden jerks consequent on pitching toil toll Tinto into holes the road from the ben bench into this city is in a wr wretched etcher etchet condition af after ter night it would be impossible for a stranger to drive down the dugway without tipping over and there is no bridge over the west branch branch of the river immediately at the foot of the dugway and teams have to drag through the rocky bottom after crossing the bridge over f he main stream you ou have to wind and twist through brush ani and rocks antl anil water courses to a most m perplexing extent you may mav exclaim f where are the road commis commissioners sio ners where are a re the city fathers of what spirit are the tho people and echo answers where and what it seems to be a settled idea around here hat if a road is barely it is good f nough bough and it is not till it becomes impassible nd wagons are broken and teams are all but up that any notice is taken of their bad condition then a little work is done just enough to enable you to oget get alon aion along androit and so it goes oes and we never have good roads I 1 would inform you that provo is up with a nie spirit of the age for not only have we fast men but a sprinkling of that description tion fion of women A few 11 strong strom minded prima donnas and fast senoritas seno ritas have led out in in a series of leap year parties and although those participating may ulay have enjoyed them yet the le more sober portion of our community seem to think that if they have not entirely run the leap year brivil privilege ege in the ground they havenith have with the aid of champagne ae come near making their performances ap par ridiculous what the feelings of young gentlemen must have been who were invited I 1 will leave you to judge but will state that a prominent line n one invitation card read ls is as 19 follows gentlemen are expected to pay for their ticket at the door that is decidedly cool for a leap year party patty I 1 dont think that any man who was present would have gone there with any ti ny other idea than to pay the bill but to have that provision inserted in the card was a novelty indeed E education du cation catlon and educational institutes a are re somewhat below par in provo I 1 think in may y safely say there is not a ward schoolhouse school house bouse in in th the e city sometime ago a great excitement was got up in the fourth IV ard in regard to building a good school house meetings were neld held buncombe bum combe speeches made a committee appointed and the thing was to be done forthwith but alas aias for the stability of human enthusiasm thusia sm the summer heats have wilted it and a few loads of rock laying laving on the ground is 13 all that can be seen of the noble structure now mr editor to a man of my genus P this is deplorable our boys and girls are runn running ing i wild for want of proper tra training ining and culture and I 1 think a school room a most proper place to bestow the labor necessary to develop the youthful mind and I 1 may confidently assert hat if the time which has been loafed away ind and the money which has been spent at and around whisky point during the past year and a half had been devoted to public improvement a good schoolhouse school house bouse might have been built in all the wards of the city it is a lamentable fact apparent to all who have their eyes op enthat if ignorance and impudence are to form the characteristics of the next acting generation then some of our youth are amply qualified for their position and its requirements in rn making making this last sweep sweeping ing declaration I 1 w would ouid wi wish it understood t that hat there are a few commendable exe exceptions probably ably enough 11 to save the city but mr editor in the main its an oer true tale there is not much doing in the line of build ing at present although one or two individuals talk of putting up good houses in the fall one item deserves special notice mr david Cluff assisted by several of his younger brothers is building a workshop in in which he intends carrying on cabinetmaking cabinet making and carpentering in all its branches the buil bull building I 1 believe building dint ia is 60 feet by 24 two stories hig high and strongly built bulit an undershot wheel 10 feet by 4 is to turn a lathe two circular and one upright saws in the west room of the lower stor story and the east room will be occupied for fini finishing aling the west room up stairs will be set apart for a paint shop and the east room on the same story is to be finished kofl and devoted to school purposes the coming winter the boys deserve great credit for the industry and perseverance they have shown thus far in this undertaking people spoke discouragingly cou ragingly and some manifested opposition but the boys stuck to their text and have bave succeeded almost beyond their expectations mr cluff intends to manufacture and keep a stock of furniture of all kinds and various patterns on hand band so that people may have opportunity to gratify their tastes in selecting those styles which may be most pleasing to them having exceeded the limits I 1 at first intended I 1 will now close hoping I 1 may improve and catch hold bold of the spirit of the time tima which is rather doubtful scein seeing our distillery went up a few nights ago yours |
