compare Republican President Eisenhower’s atti- rI 4 f 1 fi 1 i $ i 'h tude toward education and opportunities for youths with Republican Governor J Bracken Lee’s attitude toward the same things is interesting revealing and saddening President Eisenhower said in his State of the Union message: “Youth — our greatest resource — is being seriously neglected in a vital respect The nation as a whole is not preparing teachers or building schools fast enough to keep up with the increase in our population” Governor Lee said in his message to the special session of the Utah Legislature on December 4: “I rcommend that state support for the operation and support of the Central Area and Salt Lake Area Vocation Schools be withdrawn effective next June ” In the one case a Republican president is asking for more schools in which to train the youth of our land and in the other a Republican governor is asking for a reduction in the number of schools and the number of teachers Contrast a Republican President’s indorsement of the good work done by our teachers with our Republican governor’s slur at teachers Governor Lee said that the main reason for his working to transfer schools to LDS operation was to “break up a trend through the Utah Education Association and National Education Association aimed at controlling education” To attack associations made up exclusively of teachers is to attack the teachers who make up the associations Our Republican President wouldn’t do that Our Republican governor does it frequently President Eisenhower in his State of the Union message went on to say: “The preparation of teachers as indeed the control and direction of public education policy is a state and local responsibility However the federal government should stand ready to assist states which demonstrably cannot provide sufficient school buildings In order to appraise the needs I hope that this year a conference on education will be held in each state culminating in a national conference From these conferences on education every level of government— from the federal government to each local school hoard should gain the information with which to attack this serious problem” Seemingly Utah is a state which can demonstrate it needs federal aid because Governor Lee in his message to the special session declared “It will be necessary to dispense with the support of some functions of government I propose that we take this step effective next June by discontinuing the operation of Carbon Snow and Dixie Colleges” Governor Lee later added Weber College to the list of our educational institutions to he axed and the Republican majority of the Legislature ‘did his bidding Thus we have the paradox of a Republican National Administration advocating an increase in the number of public school facilities and educational opportunities while the Republican State Administration of Utah is reducing the supply of public school facilities and opportunities Utah Republicans must be wondering which Republican leadership to follow — that in Washington represented by the Eisenhower administration promoting education' or the Governor Lee leadership in Utah which is destroying education It seems to us the situation holds an opportunity for friends of Weber College We are according to Governor Lee unable to support the number of schools to which we have’ become accustomed Therefore we must be among the needy states President Eisenhower has offered to help So we can ask for federal aid and thus bring about a federal inquiry which should reveal what has happened in six years of the J Bracken Lee administration to Utah’s once remarkable willingness and ability to support public education President Eisenhower points the way to the solution of our state and national education problems by urging the holding of state and national conferences These conferences would be composed of the finest talent of both state and nation and out of their deliberation would come longterm programs for improving education facilities to meet the needs of our youth We are certain that the Eisenhower administration would not approve of the action of one man who through the use of force and trading eliminated four Utah state colleges in secret caucus at a special session of the Legislature We call upon Governor Lee to call back the Legislature and try to undo the harm he and the Legislature have done JANUARY 10' 1954 34 Pages 15! 33! 3 Sections 45 4 1 36 34 4!Mlnneapolis 23New York Portland 44 Salt Lake 59 31San Fran Butte No Max Min 24' Los Angeles 35 35 43
