Show EVENING TTUDAY — NOVEMBER 22 1935 I SPAIN REVIVES S TO STUDY U DE VEGA PLAYS WAYS TO TURN GOAL INTO OIL Process Yielding Low Cost Gasoline Sought At Pittsburgh PITTSBURGH Research prompted by the rapid depletion of oil reserves vlll be started here upon completion of a proposed ma- chine that rill squeeze gasoline and motor ©U out ©f coal The machine advocated as a nec essity by scientists and natural re sources experts for many rears will be among the first of its kind ever built According to Dr H H Starch who Is in charge of the work 100 pounds of pulverized coal poured into the machine will emerge in the form? of crude oil— 99 pounds of it By distilling this thoroughly the scientists can get as much as 75 pounds of gasoline The cost of the gasoline will be about 14 cents a gallon Dr Storch believes however that the cost may be reduced to 10 cents a gallon or less after a year's research RISING PRICES SEEN According to present standards of course such a price would make the cost prohibitive inasmuch as gasoline is now produced for about 5 cents a gallon Government officials who have authorized the work however are convinced that the price of crude petroleum will rise gradually dur ing the next decade or so due to depletion of the present rich oil fields They point out that should the United States become involved in war or if the states should de- ' cide to conserve their petroleum supplies by passing restrictive legislation there will be a demand for "coal gasoline much sooner ' U S FUNDS AVAILABLE On this assumption the govern -- —(UP)-— -- o MADRID — (UP)— Spain is oele brating this year the tercentenary of the death of its great dramatist Lope de Vega one of the world's most prolific writers De Vega wrote more than 1800 plays and was equally productive in other literary work composing epics romances lyrics pastorals and novels Some of his most famous plays such as "La Dama Boba" or The Stupid Lady'' and "Fuenteovejuna" have been staged here this year in the Teatro Espanol the semi-oicial state theater and played in one of Madrid's leading parks just as they were played in de Vega's time They also have been produced to some extent in the provinces wnere revival has strangely enough the success man had a more popular in Madrid De Vega's plays are so numerous that only about 450 of them have ever been gathered and - definitely attributed to him Even though his dramatic works were written' in verse he wrote a hundred of them he once said in only 24 hours each and there are records preserved to day that bear out tales of his mar' velous facility At one time he undertook a play in collaboration another dramatist writing one act Lope de Vega a second and the two doing the third jointly The other man rose at 3 a m to complete his part but de Vega did not get up until two hours later then finished his section wrote a long poem and after eating a hearty breakfast went out to water the garden while waiting for his friend to complete the other -- ii - part Lope de Vega wrote his first play at the age of 12 His enormous production is explained in part by the fact that he could earn very little for a play and that the pub lic was constantly demanding new ones Until a few years before his death he scoffed at his plays as mere potboilers and thought his fame would be based on his other ment has authorized an expenditure work Today all except his plays of $25000 for the first year of re- practically are forgotten — search at the local Bureau of Mines ahd the Public Works administra : tion has advanced $17000 for the Scotch Home laboraWeaving building of a "bomb-protory in which experiments can be conducted in safety To The coal that underlies a large part of western Pennsylvania - has LONDON — Cottasre industrv in makepractically the same chemical the '' up as liquid petroleum If a little HarrisScottish island theof Lewis and hydrogen can be added to coal it hand-mad- e producing tweeds is enjoying com becomes petroleum parative prosperity after a neriod of severe depression The revival has been brought Nominee Goes 625 about largely by the limitation of the trade-mar- k to genuine products of the local industry to the exVotes clusion Miles of imitation machine-mad- e which has revived tliA con goods COCHRANE Ont — (UP) — Prob- fidence of the nublic in th psp re ably the four most expensive votes markable materials and certainly among the hardest Lengths of the tweed were nre- quartet to get were won by Deputy sented oy the islanders to the Duke Returning Officer AT Ivy during and Duchess of Gloucester as wed the recent election ding presents Ivy traveled 625 miles on a round ——--— trip which took 12 days and rearea is 294492 sauare Turkey's' quired train canoe motorboat and miles foot travel to reach Mammawenat-taw- a in the far northern Ontario country where four registered voters awaited the- opportunity to cast their ballots — f of Returns o - I : Faculty At McGill Attacked By Paper PAINESVILLE O— (UP)— After years Antonio Pizzf is to be rewarded for bravery in the battle oi Aauwa in Ethiopia He has re ceived word that Premier Musso lini will send him a medal for hero ism in action Pizzi one of the few survivors in the massacre said he killed 18 natives in rescuing an onicer thousand animals nri sjaugntereci annually in sacrificial worsmp to uonrucius in China --i niiiiiini o I mo m Jell-We- mm 2 - rt—-m- rrm1 M' - 1H -- Z — riAVonnAESE f 8 lb pkg $139 630 Sleepy Hollow 2448 Washington Avenue Qt jug YOU DO CET THE COFFEE WITH THE STRENGTH ESSENTIAL MEASURE IN THE SAME WAY EVERY DAY HOW CAN THE COFFEE VARY?
